I have a Nikon D70 and i've been wanting to buy a macro lens for awhile. I want to be able to get real close to small subjects i.e. flwoers, insects textures etc.

Which lens would be the best buy?

I am in the same situation. The most popular lens from Nikon on this site is the 105 mm, with the 60 mm close behind. There is a price difference of about $200 between the two. I am kind of leaning toward the 60mm, but am not totally sure.

I have the 105 and love it. It is a beautiful lens that is also the perfect focal length for portraits.

Go with the 105.

I got a set of extension tubes and macro filters - they work fine and either can be a cheap alternative to buying an expensive macro lens, especially if (like me) you just want to mess around and experiment.

The 105, however, is on my short list of desired lenses.

The Nikkor 105mm/2.8D lens can give some really awesome macros. It's a fabulous lens.

4 votes for the 105 Nikkor, one for the Sigma 105, and none for the 60mm. Gee, I guess the 105 is probably the way to go.

Also Scott 105mm is a focal length you don't have, whereas 60mm is covered with the kit lens

From what I've heard, the Tamron 90mm 2.8 is reputed to be an amazing macro lens, along the same quality as the Sigma 105.

Here's another vote for the Sigma 105/2.8 EX lens. I bought it about 3 months ago and it's a terrific lens. As the previous poster mentioned, the Tamron 90 Di lens has a good reputation as well, but I personally prefer the build of Sigma EX lenses over Tamron's. Sharpness seems identical (brilliant) on both lenses in all the tests I've seen.

Edit: here are various samples from the sigma 105. just stuff from this site the majority of it isn't even macro but it doesn't have to be, right? This is an awesome portrait lens as well.

Sigma 105mm EX f2.8 DG Macro

I have had a 60mm macro for 5 years and love it. With the d70 it becomes a 120mm

The main differences between the 60mm and the 105mm would be working distance and DOF. The 105mm will allow you to keep the lens a greater distance from the subject to achieve the same magnification, but the the 60mm will have more depth of field at any given f/stop.

B&H. The prices may be a little higher then some online stores, but if they say it in in stock it is. Never had a problem. Another good place is Flashpoint Cameras. I have gotten some great deals from them.

Have a Quantaray 50mm 2.8 which serves me quite well. Don't remember what I paid for it but as I recall it wasn't terribly expensive.

if you can find one...
//www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=197010&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
will turn any lens you have into a macro lens. A 50mm will be 1:1 and 100mm lens will be 1:2, and a 24mm will be about 2:1.

Love my Sigma 105 mm. Recommended it to a Nikon friend (D70) who also loves it.

AWESOME portraits. Awesome macros. Shoots a bit soft at f/2.8 and occasionally "searches" in AF mode--I can deal with these issues. Other than that very little to complain about.

Adorama has it.

You may be a bit off on the ratings though.

"...magnification ratios of 1:7 at the 105mm end to 2.8:1 at the 28mm..."

I bought the Tamron 90mm 2.8 mainly because it was 200 dollars cheaper than even the sigma 2.8 - and I'm really happy with it thus far.
