Hi,

I was looking into buying an umbrella softbox, and I noticed that there are two different ideas. Both styles are made the same... and umbrella with the opening covered in fabric. However, with one, the shoot through part is the domed side, and the light is shot directly through the white fabric. On the other, the shoot through part was the flat side, and the light was bounced off the inside of the umbrella, and then it goes through the white diffusion. Anyway, I wondered if anyone had any experience with these. Which produces better results... the one that reflects first or the one that shoots straight through the white part.

Thanks,

Jen

Wish I could help you but I am not very knowledgable on lighting but would like to see some comments. So, my help to you is to give you a bump.

Good luck

It sounds like you're comparing a Westcott Halo to a Westcott Apollo. Take a look at //www.fjwestcott.com/products/umbbasedboxes.htm and tell us this that's correct. If so, my epxerience is that the umbrella-shaped Halo is less directional and more forgiving than the Apollo which products a soft light but one whcih is definitely directional in nature.

I am looking into buying a soft box myself, I have heard they are the greatest for potrait work. I need one for photography at the clients home and I was hoping this one might work , it seems reasonably priced. Please check link below and tell me what you think, this may help you too.
