It's not broken on your blog, it's broken somewhere else and she said she would be checking it out tonight. In case you missed it in the thread earlier. ;^)

I got the members names/sites listed right (as Neil copy/pasted in forum)...now for when I want to write my own stuff that is on the left and post photos....is that just done in the Posting under create? I tried it and saved it but it didn't look like everyone elses.... I keep trying and checking back here....

colyla,

it won't look like other peoples unless you chose the same template. I chose the black one. Appears to be working now.

When you want to add something go to your dashboard at //www.blogger.com/home and just add a post

I believe I know what the error is. IE can interpret the contents as HTML even though the file does not have an extension whereas Firefox/Netscape is more picky and requires the file extension. Hopefully it's that simple.

OK - I've added two new rule breaking sets to my blog, and I had a blast doing them!

Posted 'Subject in Focus' and took another swing at 'Keep the Camera Steady' (y'all were having TOO much fun with that one - had to try it again myself!). ;^)

Stop by, take a look - let me know what you think. Take care and g'night.

I've been breaking Rule 3 (exposure) to no avail. The shots all just look like mistakes. Nothing good has come of it. I'll keep revisiting this, but for now, I've updated my Blog.

Ursula, that's a good idea in your comment. I'll try something with flatter light. Maybe something indoors.

Barry, I just took a look at your latest with the motion blur ... those are awesome, some of the best I've seen!

I finally got serious and worked pretty hard on this concept of "breaking the rules" yesterday afternoon/evening. I decided to work on the one "rule" or "habit" that I find the hardest to break, namely, keeping the horizon level.

Attempts are posted to my blog.

----------------------------------

Maybe this has been suggested already, but I think it would be good if we wrote a bit about what we think we might have learned from each of these lessons or assignments.

Two things that I have learned (or noticed) so far are:

(1) I really like "normal", or, in general I don't really like the results I get when "breaking the rules";

(2) In the process of breaking the rules I am getting some other pictures that I sorta like. I think that's really cool.

Thoughts?

Per ursula's idea of commenting...

I've found that the rule of thirds can be broken to an extreme (i.e. - subject upper-right hand corner) and have potential.

I've also found that motion blur can be fun and I definitely want to experiment some more here for abstract style prints!

My camera doesn't like to move past middle ground subjects when focusing (hard to force background focus on anything less than extreme distance).

I totally agree with trying to state what we are learning. I've tried to do that in my blog entries when I post my experimental images.

I completely agree about writing what you've learned from the exercise. I think the more you write in general about your technique and experience, the more we all benefit (including the writer).

I've done several more exercises and updated my Blog with the first of them.

One thing I tried yesterday, which I found to be a blast, was breaking multiple rules. Not only a blast, but I had more successes (photos I would consider keeping). I'll post those sometime today.

MY BOOKS HAVE COME! Now as soon as my company leaves I'll be good to go...

Can someone do me a favor and send me a detailed e-mail telling me what I need to know to create a blog that's functional for the constraints of this program? I haven't been able to keep up and there's a LOT of blog-related posts to wade through. I've never created a blog, so keep it simple, straightforward, and logical for me, alright?

My e-mail addy is on my profile.

Thanks, Robt.

Robert, I've sent you an email with the link to the blog site. The instructions on the site are very good. If you have any questions just send an email.

Broke another rule. Yeehaa!

my blog
07/31/2005 06:44:00 PM · #145
More examples available on my blog

Are we going to hang around on these rules for a short while until the others get caught up, or are we going to slowly move on to the next section and take our time in there?

I don't mind either, just interested to know what people think.

I was thinking of posting exercise 2 tomorrow. It's from the same chapter, and I think we can still go on breaking rules too. Monday is the 1 week mark for exercise 1.

Just posted some more stuff on breaking the rules, although I don't think I broke much of anything with this set of pictures (out of focus stuff).

I think it's a good idea to move on to exercise 2 tomorrow.

By the way, I noticed that if I don't hit the refresh button I don't get the new stuff (I just was checking falc's blog, and that happened.

We are still on the original "reading assignment" in my earlier post.

Exercise 2.

Part 1: Have someone (other than yourself) choose three seemingly unrelated items/objects for you to photograph together. Don't expect masterpieces, expect a struggle. Minimum requirement: 20 pictures.

Part 2: Pick up your camera, a 35-50mm lens, and your tripod, and go to the front (or back) door of your home. Take 19 steps. Mark the spot. Take seven more steps from that point. The seven steps from your original 19 mark the radius of a circle, in which you should shoot at least 20 images. You should feel desperation during the exercise. You will only start to make visual break throughs when you have run out of the obvious picture possibilities.

Write up your experiences and post 10 pictures per part (20 in all) in your BLOG.

This is close to the text of Pattersons book, but not exact, so as not to plagiarise.

Blog your experience here or in your FPWG blog!

Also: Please make sure to read all the other members blogs, and comment (best way to show you've read it, even if it's just to offer a word or two of encouragement.)

Edit: Made bold so this stands out in the thread.

Question on Part 2.

The radius formed - I understand we are to stay within that radius to take pictures...is the subject material to also be within that radius?

For example, if I go out my front door I have a view of the horse pasture and rolling hills beyond. I could take pictures of that from various positions within my radius - OR - I could limit my photo subjects to items that lay within my radius.

Is that clear as mud? ;^)

Take pictures within the radius. The original exercise, in case my writing and slight wording changes muddy it, is on Page 31.

Also, as I'm sure this will come up: he used the word "Normal" lens, and I interpret that as being a normal lens on a 35mm film camera, so that's 50mm, so I made it 35-50 on a dSLR (but 28-50 is ok too.) I am not sure we have to be so picky, but I think the point of the exercise is to use your eyes and your imagination rather than your fancy equipment.
