just for the hell of it, this was going to be my entry for the curves challenge (I since came up with something different/better)

Thought I'd ask for comments on it anyway, mainly because I like it from a technical perspective, (not really a creative one)

Image here Curves

The picture is as shot, straight from the camera. Sharpened slightly in Photoshop and a very minor tweak in the levels. The effects were all
done in camera - the blue by using a red card to set a custom white balance and then under exposing the shot to get the slightly solarised/ deep colours. Curious to hear people's reactions to it.

I wonder that even though these sort of effects are allowed by the rules, if it would have been voted down for looking fixed in photoshop?

Cool! Very imaginative.

The first shots were even more 'imaginative' where I spelt Curves CURVS

Was slightly annoyed when I noticed after I got them back to the computer :)

Alas alack, I feel like I seriously fumbled this competition. I spent a ton of time carefully shooting all week and came up with some (in my opinion) rather nice shots. Then I went out on Sunday to try and snap a bunch more pictures in less controlled circumstances, raced home, and rushed to get the few that actually fit the challenge in a submissable state.

With the submission deadline looming less than an hour away, I had a complete crisis! WHAT PICTURE DO I SUBMIT??? I did a quick poll of the housemates, and they both suggested one of the new ones, something I wasn't entirely pleased with. I have a really hard time judging my own work without some time to reflect on it, so I went with their choice. I AM A FOOL! :)

I like almost all of my non-submitted pictures better than the one I did submit. Here they are for your enjoyment: Woulda Coulda Shoulda

And no, the current submission with the eggs is NOT mine. The picture I submitted is nothing like that one or the ones in my gallery! I guess this is the price I pay for waiting until the last minute to try and decide what to do. I think a crummy score will do wonders for me, I'm way too invested in this to be healthy! That deadline was rolling up on me like a tsunami, racing pulse, shakey hands... THE PRESSURE!

Whew, I just had to get that off my chest. :)

How did you do the blue ? Is that lighting effects or in-camera effects ? Liked the egg on velvet - cool shot.

Oh yeah, and just for you
my entry without the annoying bit in the upper right corner :)

huh. I didn't notice the annoying thing in the corner until you brought it up. Now who will I look up to? ;) Seriously, nice shot.

The first blue picture is lit by my hand-held blue LED keychain. Totally cheesy, huh? The second is blue because the velvet is blue, when I hit it with a flash it just exploded with reflected blue light. If I'd bothered to go back and re-shoot that one with the proper focus it might have been a good submission. As it was, I was leaning towards 'Eggs (1 of 6) v2' or 'Eggs (3 of 6)' or 'Cardinal', before my Complete Crisis of Confidence. Even now I'm completely unable to make a decision!

I've already gotten an e-mail about this thread, and I want to clarify that I did not shoot the current submission with the eggs, 'Eleven'. In the e-mail they expressed concern that since I've gotten high scores in the last few challenges people might mark me down in this challenge, and I do not want anyone to make the same assumption and mark down whoever it is who created 'Eleven' just because they think it's me. Apart from being incredibly juvenile, you'd be punishing the wrong person!

These are the kind of things I think we should be allowed to fix in
digital processing. Also removing dust/durt etc. But it is fair enough that the people who run the site don't want people doing editing like that in my 'fixed' version above.

Also would like the ability to use the curves commands and some selective masking :) It is a hard call to make though - after all
what is digital photography ? Does it stop or start when you press
the shutter button ?

And ignoring all that - eleven just happens to be fantastic!

(No I didn't do it either - I just wish I did)

Talk about deep regret. I'm not alone.

I rushed to snap my current entry, 'seized' with inspiration as it were, and dumped my previous one. Only to find, 4 other similar ones..

*SIGH*

Well, this was my earlier one, which I really love much more than the one I've sent in.

Cheers

At least you guys sent one in. I got so spastic over which shot to send in that I didn't even bother! I shot a few things and got a case of the "I'm not good enough to compete with those guys" and "I must find something better to shoot"... I ended up running smack out of time and courage. Oh well.. I won't let it get to me this go around.

By the way Mousie.. those are great shots. ;)

I really like the one you didn't submit, yyyap! I worry that it's not 'curvy' enough for the fickle voters here at the DPC... you may have made the right choice, even if it is a cool photo!

I'd really like to see other people's alternate entries, as long as they don't give away who shot what in the current round. C'mon people, post your alternates!

Thanks. Coming from you, I feel vindicated.

And you're spot on about why I chose to submit something more predictable (and boring) for the sake of curvature.
