As promised, some changes are in the works to improve the critique club experience for everyone involved. I wanted to take a moment to announce some of those changes now:

- Previously, all critique club members were entitled to priority in receiving critiques on their own entries. In the near future, critique club members will receive priority only if they have completed 2 or more critiques in the last 7 days. Critique club members who have not done so will be selected with the same priority as the general population. This will ensure that active critique club participants continue to be rewarded for their efforts while also benefitting more users of DPChallenge at large.

- In the very near future, we will be implementing a suggestion from Gordon that we require additional information from any photographer wishing to receive a critique. I think this is the single most important thing we can do to improve the criitque club experience for all involved, but there are some implementation issues that must be worked out. This is a high priority for me and I will be working with Langdon to get them implemented as quickly as possible. Expect to see this in the coming weeks.

If anyone has any other specific suggestions for improving the critique club experience, please let me know!

Thanks,
Terry

Sounds great -- only real "issue" I see is "requiring" exposure data or not, since some folks (including myself sometimes) can't get it. I think requiring valid info in the comment field is fine...but then I always put something in there anyway.
Maybe the photo details area could be broken into separate fields, or its title changed to something a little more stimulating, like "What Were You Thinking When You Took This Photo?" (Or not...)

We're not going to require exposure information for the reason you specified. We will, however, require other information such as "what were you thinking," etc.

A question I've often asked myself after submission dates are over and the vote is in the 4's...

Except, when the vote is in the 3's it's usually preceeded by "You [offensive term], what..."

That IS why I phrased it that way...

I didn't know where to put this post so I figured I'd put it here.

I'd like to see how many critiques I've done this week vs. last week and the week before. Maybe put how many useful checks you get too, why not? Maybe we could give some kind of prize or maybe have the "critic of the month" or something where we might even get a little recognition out of it.

Maybe it would stimulate a few more critiques.

I don't know if it would be better to put it out in the open for everyone or leave it just for the CC members to see, but it would be nice to see that stuff once in awhile. I hate trying to wade thru comments given to see them. I think it'd be good to have 3 or 4 weeks worth put there plus the current week and the overall number of CC's done. Does that sound reasonable? Maybe have the list sorted by total # of critiques or % of critiques helpful or something like that. Give everyone something to shoot for.

Just a thought. - Bob

Bob,

An interesting thought, indeed. I go back and forth on this. On the one hand, putting some carefully selected numbers out there might promote some healthy competition and provide additional motivation for some people to do critiques. On the other hand, any time you put those kinds of numbers out there, someone will look for a way to "game" the system. Overall, I'm concerned that the quality of critiques might suffer as people try to blow through critiques in a race to top the list.

Suggestions on how to deal with this are, of course, welcome.

How about a CC member only being able to see how many they have done but NOT how many others have done?

I definitely agree we would need somethiing to cheer us up, like the number of critiques we made...
I also would like to know how many of us we are, so that I know how many critiques I should give...

One suggestion that was batted around a while back, but I'm not sure how hard it would be to implement, is a PM being sent to the photographer when their photo receives a CC comment. I don't know if it's needed now that the new "view comments" thing in our profiles lets us check what comments we've recieved recently, but it might be a nice thing if it isn't a pain to automate.

Very good idea. I noticed some critique club members were doing that and I started doing the same. But it's a real pain...
