I've read the basic editing rules over and over, but I still can't decide if this is legal or not.

Can I use decompose to desaturate an image, keeping only one channel (e.g Red)?

If so, can I decompose and then adjust the opacity etc of the Channel layers to get different mixes? Is that the same as using Adjustment layers?

As far as I understand, you cannot your layers with image data in it, so no.

If you can achieve the same result without resorting to layers, then that should be ok. (So tweaking the red, green and blue channels' curves/levels seperately should be fine)

Read this for Selective Desaturating within Basic Editing:

Layers I don't think you can do. Maybe SC would want to chime in on that.

Thanks for the (quick!) replies. Guess I'll have to do another way.

You can make overall adjustments to the individual color channels (blur, desaturate, etc.), but you can't create a layer that has data on it.
