Just wanted to say that simply after browsing the thumbnails for Late Night, I reckon there are some stunning shots in there. Glad I decided to skip this, and am looking forward very much to handing out a bunch of higher scores when I sit down later tonight to start voting :)

my browse of the thumbs makes me wonder how many people are reading the challenge description? Not so many, or a lot more people have open air houses than i ever envisioned!

You are right. I am one of the offenders. I misread the description... sigh... I shall suffer for it :) (as well I should).

i was just thinking the same thing. I have had a very quick look and will look and comment later, but i must say there are some stunning shots here

I noticed the "inside" shots too, but what I've noticed is the amount of "white balance" problems people seem to have. There have been a couple of just stunning shots but they had some strange color cast. I know it's not easy to do white balance when it's dark (lord knows I can never seem to do it) but I wish a couple had taken the time tro try it. I mean...There are some really STUNNING shots.

I'm not so worried about the white balance issue, color is sort of a personal choice in night shots and soemtimes extreme cast seems the best choice to me; for example, under sodium vapor lamps. Aside from the strangely large number of inside shots and sunset/twilight shots, what IU've really noticed is how MANY of these danged shots are not roated to vertical. And what's really strange is, as far as I can see, without exception, every shot that's noticeably skewed is LEANING OVER TO THE RIGHT.

Anyone have a guess as to why that's the case? But it's a shame, some wonderful shots could be so much better if they were rotated to plumb...

It has to do with the speed the earth is rotating and it's effect on the flux capacitors. We see straight, but our brains automatically correct for this anomaly.

Also make sure you are sitting directly in front of the monitor with the picture centered in front of you. I just looked at mine, and I thought, wait a minute, I know I checked the verticals, and then I noticed that I was sitting skewed which made it look like it was leaning to the right. Once I squared up, it was back to vertical

I keep a smallish window (about 450 pixels square) open on my desktop and drag it over images I want to check the alignment of, fast and easy to do. This is how I assure myself I'm not skewed on my perch LOL.

Some of the color cast was good, but ther were others that I'd loved to have seen with a genuine white balance. As for the skewing it drove me nuts, that and the really small pictures. I gave out, so far, around 10 -10's and 7 - 1's. It's the most 1's I've ever given out.

The funny thing is that I just left about six straight comments suggesting better leveling and then looked at my own entry and noticed it's off as well. It might be too dark to notice in my case but on the well lit waterline images it's a pretty big distraction. I'm very sensitive to that issue after my first entry in Bridges and fell prey to a simple case of late night negligence.

The twilight shots are a bit strange for this challenge and I don't know what to make of the indoor images either.

I don't have inside shot, I don't have skewed (I hope) don't have but 6 comments none of which are really negative except the first hidden one that left me a paragraph and I'm on 4.4...guess the critique comes after the challenge results are posted from those honest brave souls not scared to? very nice shots in this one..and I've seen "triangles" and "inside outs" lots! lol

Brad's wrong....

It has to do with the fact that all cameras are designed with the grip on the right hand. Now one might think that since the camera is held on the right side it would dip to the left. And although that is true, most people forget that the entire camera is now held by their right arm. This added weight on the right side of the body causes the individual to tilt to the right (thus causing the horizon to tilt to the right). And now...you know the rest of the story.

Aaarg, I'm getting so annoyed at comments being left on my photo!

Note to anyone who leaves comments to the effect of, It's out of focus, Should have used a tripod, it's a bit dark...

1. A six second exposure snip tends to do that, check out the rest of the image and you'll see it's sharp.

2. Ya, used a tripod, see above.

3. It's night, of course it's dark.

I think my head is going to explode soon, LOL!!! I used to check off all comments as helpful because I was glad to get them, but I'm going to stop for people who obviously typed without looking at the photo.

I also have that problem sometimes, I get that right lean. I do think its because my camera has bad ergonomics and when I press the shutter it tilts to the right ! I wish I had the chance to enter this night challenge, I see some dissapointing shots so far.

Hi ya'll,
Love some of the comments on late night. Even the one that says "looks more like dinner time to me". WOW in some places, especially tourist areas people eat way into the early morning. I guess 10:07 pm was not late enough. snip I'll try realy hard if we get a chance again to take the pic at 1159 pm.;)
If we get a challenge of "Early Morning" I'll be certain to get that picture taken at 0001 am because 6 or 6 am is too late I'm sure.
Just having fun, no offense to anyone, love the comments!

i slightly edited a couple of posts here to remove identifying information about images in the current challenge. feel free to talk about the challenge, but don't let on which photo is yours.

remember that anonymity is a big part of what makes the challenges work, and some of us like to be surprised. :)

Best comments ever! These occurred right next to each other and are proof "beauty is in the eye of the scorer"

Commenter A) Yeah so. Not very interesting, now is it...? [No Camera -- Vote Only]

Commenter B) very interesting [Camera]

*lol*

Nice to know my photo is both very interesting and not very interesting.

At least you are getting comments. I still have not received any. Good, Bad or other wise. Hope I wasn't one who left you one of those comments.

My submission has a skyline that curves due to a bridge and island, and does drop as you go to the left of the image. I like it. it is plumb though. And I agree, an awful lot of inside and not "late" at night pics (like sunsets).

this is my first contest. ive recieved about 6 comments, some helpful, some not. the problem i had is deciding which picture to submit. i figured there would be a lot of cityscapes so i tried to veer away from that. maybe i shouldnt have. whatever, live and learn. thanks to everyone who comments and good luck to everyone. cant wait for the next open contest!
