We're taking off for a trip to China in a few days and decided to only take my wife's D70 with us instead of the bulky and attention-getter 1D mk 2... (i'd still like to bring it, but the risks are too much) Anyway, I bought a Tokina 12-24mm for the Nikon D70, boy, is this lens sharp!!!!!! Edge to edge sharpness, truly amazing wide angle lens and $400+ cheaper than the Nikon version.

Anyway, took it to the Texas Capitol and here are the shots, the corners are as clean as the center:

I found a review.

There's seems to be some good information there.

The risks are minimal, you are going to regret NOT bringing your 1D II there. The photo ops are EVERYWHERE...

I recently purchased the Tokina 12-24 lens. It is very good. I was skeptical at first, but now I carry it with me at all times. I have many samples as well. Check my site for Tokina 12-24 samples.
Have a great time. Mysite

Well the difference is probably that I am ethnic Chinese (though with a US citizenship) and so while they might not be robbing Westerners, they might with me and my wife :)

For most shootings the D70 is just as good as 1D mk 2 -- the noise level is another thing, but usage wise it's OK.

Yeah it rocks. I will probably put the 18-70mm nikkor on (another fine lens, better than the one that came on the Rebel kit) and use it for most of the shots, and in scenic areas, then i'll put on the 12-24mm (especially in interior shots like Forbidden city where the space is tight). Should be interesting to use on the Great Wall too.

LOL :) Well, if i had my 10D still instead of sold it, then i would have just taken that along and let my wife use her d70 :)

D70 is a great camera but the only thing that bugs me is that on ISO 400 and above, you can see for example, with an ultra wide, one side of the sky might be slightly darker (due to where the sun is), and the darker side will have MORE noise :( Basically in low light the D70 is a poor performer (but still usable images) compared to the 1D mk 2 (i guess it's not a fair comparison but i'd expect the Rebel XT to have the same performance as 1d mk2). And, it has a tendency to preserve highlights, so i had to use a custom curve for it. (adding 1/3 stop to it would clip the highlights, so the only way to get around it is a custom curve). Guess i'll keep it at ISO 200-400 max on this trip, i'm lugging a tripod as well....

The AF on the D70 is top notch though, it's always dead on.
