I was in the process of hanging an exhibit for the Alabama Writers Symposium on the Campus of Alabama Southern College. I had brought my little Bichon Hobo with me and a sixpack of beer. Anyway I had several students and the Dean of Academic Affairs helping me hang the work when the city police and the a county sheriffs deputy come in with a security guard and the guard tells me I can't have beer and dogs on campus. (something about the dog might scratch the new marble floors) The dean tells the police that the guard over stepped his bounds, but then the president of the college comes in to tell me my dog and the beer have to go. I quickly obliged. I took the dog and the beer out to the truck. Then I came back in for my prints.

It is all a bit longer then this, and I have had setup dates changed four times since they first asked me to do this exhibit. The Governor of Alabama was due to come see the exhibit tomorow and they finally setback the setup date to this afternoon. Screw them.

One thing I have learned in life is don't sell out. There are things in life that may seem like bad moves, and this may be one, but I would always feel like I let someone stick me in the butt if I had gone along with all the bullshit.

Took beer to work? Don't try and defend that one, sorry.
the dog? perhaps to your studio, but again, to another place of business?? Perhaps you should take you dog, prints, beer and pick up truck back to the trailer park.

Sorry to be so harsh, but c'mon - comon sense and some class, any class, would say don't do that.

Or are there different rules in the South?

I was going to say about the same thing...but of course we're both from Pittsburgh -- maybe things are different there.

Kiss my trailer park ass. This was not work. I don't work for the college and I have drinken beer with the president of that college on the campus in the past.

If you would have lit a cig you would have the trifecta. :)

ignorance may be bliss, but I think the truth may be painful in this instance.

I sort of have to agree with the others... Bringing a six-pack on campus (not to mention intending to drive afterwards), while doing business, and with students (who could very easily have been under age) probably wasn't a good choice. As far as I know, you can't just drink anywhere you like. Bringing the dog inside a public place isn't acceptable in most buildings (here, anyway), so that doesn't really surprise me either.

A long (long, long) time ago we had a (really old) substitute teacher who would smack her hands together really hard to get our attention. She scared me. Please don't do that. ;-)

OK, I take it back and shaking finger instead.

(here anyway)? Where is here?

When Nall came from France to set his art exhibit up on the same campus four years ago I was there to help him. He brought his dog Shorty who had full access to the campus and no one said a word. Half of the galleries I have set up in actually serve beer. The rest would not have said a word. The campus will be serving both beer and wine during the Symposium.

America has become a feel good nation, meaning "if I don't feel good about you, you must change" LOL. Screw them and their sensitivities. Next time, play their game and have them sign a contract that has ultra fine print stating that you are to be given permission to partake in said beer and scratch said dog until sun come down. If they deny your contract, sue, but only for a compensatory public apology.

Here = New York State. Unless it's a seeing-eye dog, animals aren't usually permitted in public buildings that I know of. :-)

I suppose if it's the norm (which I still find really odd) and the precedent is that you can drink beer with your dog on campus while hanging exhibits, then they decided to pick on you for some reason. Either way, I can't imagine bringing beer....besides, I'm jealous. My college never served beer. :-/

It is not exactly a public building if it is closed to the public at the time for me to hang my exhibit. I have another exhibit up at the local museum and have never had a problem with my dog in the building. The local courthouse is the same. Besides, it isn't like they didn't know who I was and what I was going to do when they asked me to hang the exhibit.

I will make a good chunk of money on this. They asked me six months ago for some sample images to use to promote the show. They used the images on bookmarks, postcards and on the printed and online brochure, basically without telling me until everything was printed. I plan to send them an invoice at Alamy rates as soon as I contact the designer to see how many prints were run. It should be in the $5 to $6K range.

You're going to make $5k to $6k off of them and you're complaining about these trivial things? Come on...there are a lot more important things in life to get upset about than beer and canine access to the facility. Don't waste your energy on this.

I expected to make a few thousand on prints. I was not going to charge them for the use of the images. I was supposed to set up on the 22nd, but two weeks ago they changed the date to the 25th. On the 25th I show up, but they are working on the building. I took off from work that day, but no one bothered to call me. They told me to come back the next day. I come back and start setting up my prints but they have to leave the doors open because they are still working on the building (it's raining out) and they can't turn on the AC. 85F and about 90% humidity and my mounted prints start to curl. They tell me it will be ready on the 26th so I pull my prints down and bring them back on the 26th (today) because the Governor will be in the building in the morning (27th).

The beer is on ice to go with the pizza for when we finish hanging the prints. It was not like I was getting sloshed on campus.

Actually, that's any "Assistance Dog"; they come in many varieties, not just seeing-eye dogs. My Hearing Dog Karma is allowed anywhere I go, pretty much. Exceptions are places like ICU units in hospitals etc, where clinical cleanliness is mandatory. She gets to fly with me on planes too :-) She goes to the dentist with me and lays there while they work on me, and to the doctor's office.

Sorry for the sidetrack :-)

I would like to give this forum a 9. Had you sparked up a smoke in the hall I think I could have pulled the 10 out. Great story, really like the contrast between Pittsburg, NYC and the Deep South. Little less cropping on the original details but again overall one of my top 5 forums ever!!!

booze, fido & art...I gotta get down South!!!

Wow, that's fascinating Bear. I've heard of other types of "assistant dogs" besides seeing dogs, but not specifically of "hearing" dogs. If you don't find it too personal or offensive, do you mind me asking in what ways does she assist you? I've always admired the special bond between people and their "assistant" dogs, and also working k-9's and their partners, like police, military etc.

A year and a half ago when i went to Italy the dog flew on the plane with me under my seat and in my lap. He stayed in my hotel room with me, rode in my rental car with me, went to bars and resturants with me. One resturant in Ascoli asked me to leave him outside while I ate. The rest brought him food to the table without me asking, gratis. He went in galleries, museums, bookstores, antique shops, ect..

The last time I was in Savannah Georgia, except for the resturants, it was the same way.

You might still give it a ten. I didn't mention that I also had a six week old baby beaver in a pet carrier in the corner. (he had to go as well)
