Frankly, I am confused.
Crossword Time did surprisingly well and came in 19th place. But I have absolutely NO CLUE as to why it was rated that high. When I took it, I tried to make the best of the situation and chose it over my others due to the simplicity and quality of the photo. However, some of my other photos like The Birth of... in the "Something New" challenge was a much better photo by me, yet it rated considerably lower than I expected. So, could some of you please enlighten me as to why you voted the way you did?

i gave you an 8, so you can relax that i didn't think it was a ten. :-)
Anyway, I liked the focus you chose to use, and like i told ya in your comment, I like the contrast of the peacefulness of the man and the "busyness" of the cars behind him.
(That and I found out i'm a sucker for pictures of older people this week!)

| crossword time - it's kinda ... kind, or peaceful, cozy, warm - i mean, it got a distinct feel. and this new testament - the idea is not obvious. when you think of it, it's alright, but as for me, the photo must affect feelings more than brains - then it's kinda more powerful. that's why i liked crossword more. |

I'm one of the people who scored the picture high and commented as such… I can't add to what I've already said, it's a first class shot all round and it fits the challenge. I can't see why you can't see why… If you get my meaning :o)

| I especially liked the tones - his pants, his jacket, his cheek, the brim of his cap, the metal hoops on the barrel ... these all coordinate so well, matching the calm, relaxed pose and expression. |

Sometimes the secret to doing well here is a combination of having a photo that is good enough for people to give it a look but not too much one way or the other to piss people off.
Your Candid photo was a good photo to attract above average votes but it was also not controversial enough to get low votes to drag you down. Whos gonna vote down a nice old guy with a crossword puzzle versus a Bible shot? >;-)
Doing well here week to week isn't about being the best all the time...a lot of the time its about being the least worst too :-)
BTW..I liked your photo..I think I scored it a 6 :-) |

Speaking as a person who has received both a 10 and a 1 on EVERY challenge I have entered (3 so far)... I think I can safely say: the voting comes down to what you like. Some pictures move others more than others (does that make sense?). As biased as it may seem, and I am not one of these, people may have had trouble with your religious theme. To each his own - shoot what you like, critique your own work and learn from comments.

Hmmm... sadly, this photo did NOT appeal to me. While true to being candid, I would rather see more of what is going on. Right now all I see is a guy lost in a crossword puzzle. But what if there was something really really interesting right behind him? Like a wedding or a juggler, etc... the point is I think this shot would have been more appealing if there was a better way to illustrate HOW MUCH he was lost in this crossword puzzle... so lost he doesn't even notice the car wreck behind him. See what I'm geting at?
I know you can't conjure up a 10-car pileup, but I think the photo would have more interest if the surroundings were shown. JMHO.

I will tell you why... just look at the top 5 shots and there is your answer... 3 of those are of elderly folks. For some reason they are great subjects.

| I don't know either. Maybe he is writing down license plate numbers or doing his grocery list. Too me it is just an average candid shot. I liked the barrel trashcan or planter the best. The cobblestone bricks but the guy, he is just a regular Joe, like most of us, maybe that is the appeal. |

Thank you very much to everyone responded....As bobgaiter pointed out...To me it was just an average shot. I did not see it as anything that would make anyone have a lot of interest in it.

I like the image, because it's sad.
It's an old man by himself, doing a crossword puzzle. For me, it just looks sad. The image is very beautiful. You are very talented. I like your Bible picture to - but the difference for me, is the Bible picture is more of a statement you are telling... whereas the old man is a statement he is telling (even if he doesn't know it.)
You set the Bible picture up, gave it great lighting and took a really nice shot. But the old man was there, beyond your control. He looks alone, again beyond your control... and you were there to capture it. Great shot.

| I think what psychephytax was saying is he has liked or done something better but it never got the same reaction from someone else. We are all different and unique in are own sort of way. I have been puzzled myself at reactions from different images by someone else and I think that is a good thing. |
