Here is my entry on the challenge . I would like a few critical eyes layed on my submission to better understand what wasnt liked about it. I didnt get that many comments and was expecting a few more at least. Especially from the 2, 3 and 4s. Thanks!

To me it seemed to lack contrast and was very soft with low light. Maybe more contrast and color would of worked better. That's just my opinion. Hope you didn't mind but here is an edit I did to describe what I mean. I did not vote in this challenge but would of given it a 6.

RedOak, I like your original entry. But a bit higher contrast and sharpness of the birds would be desirable. But the mood is fine!

Quite interesting the way you work the brightness. As mentionned on my description, i edited this pic on a laptop, and your version of the pic appears way overexposed on my LCD. That is probably my biggest problem with the post-prod done to this challenge.

For the contrast, you are right, it does give more power to details and colours. Overall, i scored 56 on 180+ which makes me really happy (first time im that high), but it would probably have scored better with changes near your exemple. Ill keep that in mind in the futur, thanks SD.

Anyone else care to comment?

Your original was good and like I said I would of given it a 6. And by all means 56 out 180+ is not bad at all. And sometimes viewing on a LCD can make a difference. Anyway your entry was good and 56/180+ a good finish.

I liked it, gave it a 6.

Would have liked a little more space on each side.
the out of focus for ground destracted me a little.

I did not have much time to vote in the callenge so I went with first impression on all the pictures I managed to vote on. Got through about half of the pictres.

"Adjusted":

The score for your image was not bad, but the image lacks "finishing" to make it a better image and higher scorer. Some folks like to pronounce their image as being "good" because it is "out of camera". But the truth is every image is improved with proper post processing.

Though your monitor may not be very good something you can do first is to try autolevels, autocontrast and/or autocolor. This will give you a good general peek at what the image "should" look like according to editing software. That is helpful with a poor monitor. You can work from there.

This is what I did to your image in my version:
1-Applied autolevels. 2-Added hue/sat layer to adjust red and yellow to bring out color in the bird beaks and some blue in the background. 3-Cloned out a couple distracting small details. 4-Added 50% greyscale layer to touch up with darken with black to bring out subtle details and used brighten with white to subtly highlight the place the birds were standing and center attention to them. 5-Applied noise reduction for a nice smooth background. 6-Applied .3 USM at 100%

This link gives me an error message and then automatically reloads the dpchallenge home page. This has happened to me before (in other threads) and I always thought it was because the link was old, but since this link was posted today ... well, I've just gotta ask :-)

RedOak, I gave you a 7 and a not-very-helpful "nice work" comment. I'll go there now and tell you why I rated your image a 7. This was definitely not a 3 or 4 score in my newbie eyes, but not a 10 either.

I also work on a crappy laptop monitor and am so happy to hear that there's someone else here with that disadvantage! Your work has come out a lot better than mine, though. Your work shows me that there is hope with our setups.

(I find the feedback everyone else is giving regarding RedOak's entry and the laptop screen tips extemelly helpful, by the way)

If you are working with a poor display it is a good idea to check the histogram of your photo, this will give you a good idea as to how well it is exposed.

This is the histogram for you photo, looking at it we see there are no pixel on the right side, these are the bright pixels. Not even looking at the photo but just looking at the histogram I can tell it is too dark.

I did like your photo BTW and gave it a 6, if it were brighter I would have given it at least a 7.

Thanks a lot everyone! This really helps me to improve on my post processing abilities (im learning everyday). Looking back at it, its true i shouldve have gone with a higher contrast, especially since i love highkey and highcontrast pictures. As for this shot of birds, it was also taken during sundown, hense the hazy goldish look, which i though would be nice.

For the framing, i wanted a really tight fit of the birds. usually when i take pictures, i imagine those pictures hung on my wall at home, and that helps me with to develop my personal taste and style in fotographie. Some like it, some dont. Same for DOF actually.

Thank you very much everyone for posting critics on this shot. If there are other comments, i would gladly appreciate it! You can all post comments directly in the comment section instead of here in the forum!

Ciao!
