Many: military, civilian policing duties, public surveying, gaming (i.e., environments), scientific, urban growth monitoring...

How 'bout Google's Key Hole service...? Their service might be able to take advantage of this technology: http://www.keyhole.com/

Of course, they're using satellites.

The software used for the TNO TPD pic is Zoomify (which, apparently, has a free version). Among their links of featured sites using their software is Space Imaging, who currently has a pretty cool zoomable picture of Falluja from satelite, plus some 9/11 before and after shots.

A must read and see. The Power of a nikon D1x with a 400mm lens.

What I find funny, is that it is from a "knowledge for business" site and they have some bad english!

OMG, top dead center is the clock. Great spotting. It took over an hour to take the 600 images.

Wow...very cool...pictures from my own back yard.

I see where their going with this one, that's black's beach down over the side. I have accidently come home with some clothing optional pictures when shooting the hang gliders there (It don't take much of a lens either).

Edit: grammar

If you read the notes on the photo, they address some of the phantoms from the stitching.

This is a film approach to maximum rez. The 2.5GP image is a digital approach with stitching. Just think of the possibilities. I mean, Claudia Schiffer's moll would have to be ten feet wide.

Yah, now imagine them using Canon's 1200mm f/5.6L Super Teelephoto lens with a Canon 1Ds Mark II 16.7 MP camera and taking 1000 photos and stitching it up...17GP photo...:)
