This made it more challenging to go out and get the shot. It seems the site may have moved in a direction I'm not fond of, but if it works for everyone then it's just me. |
Nothing has been taken away. Nobody is forcing anyone to do more editing than they want or feel comfortable with. Honestly, it exhibits a certain lack of foresight to categorically dismiss work which you are unfamiliar with simply because it makes you uncomfortable. DPC is, and has always been, about pushing yourself, learning techniques, processes, and other aspects of photography that you simply will not find anywhere else, primarily because of the community. If you don't want to learn and grow; if you simply choose not to edit at all because that's how you want it done, then by all means do so. BUT.....in challenges where certain types of editing give a distinct advantage because it's what the voters like to see, or you have someone so talented that they produce awe-inspiring work, then at least look at the work, and try to understand what the person was trying to communicate. And don't be surprised if your entry doesn't do as well. But by the same token, you should be able to dominate the Minimal challenges if you've refined your pure photography skills well.
As to "the original intent of photography", perhaps you could define that as it pertains to your point, because EVERYTHING that is being done here is photography based.
I will openly admit that "purist" talk always lights me up a little because the first thing that pops into my head is: "Who the heck nominated you to be the one to define this.".
If nothing else, you should be able to see how far the various aspects of photography have evolved. I am often amused by what I see in advertising these days. There's a local realtor here who has some hack that uses HDR and amps everything so hard that it is absolutely impossible to tell what they're trying to sell actually looks like. The work would get positively slammed here in voting. It's awful.
Anyhow.... My $0.02USD, YMMV...
