Oh, I hear ya, but I don't see how it is going to happen in any reasonable time frame. I'm thankful we still have the site and that it still works. Be it ever so humble, it feels like home... Mid-December will mark 13 years for me at DPC. When you think about it, that's pretty stunning longevity for a site like ours, lack of bells & whistles notwithstanding.

Hear hear! One might even attribute the longevity to the lack of change. Not sure I would, but wouldn't argue against it, either.

Actually it could be very easy if someone start to pay attention to what I'm writing (too much polemical? :-P). I already did a mobile site and actually I use it daily (even on the desktop), because I found it better (and because it's mine of course :-P). At the moment it is just downloading the normal DPC and re adapting the layout in a more mobile friendly way (IMHO), but it would be very easy to integrate it in the real site. Of course there are a lot of functionality still missing, but I did it just for free and when I saw the lack of enthusiasm by DPC bosses, I lost mine :-P

BTW I'm still available ;-)

I would love a mobile site, but I'm not holding my breath. Also, I don't see much discussion about having a mobile version JUST FOR forums and image viewing, but locking out any kind of voting. It wouldn't be hard. It would bring accessibility to the site, offer opportunity to have more interaction, but still limit the concerns.

Sure, you can access the site on a phone/tablet now, but it's cluttered and difficult to click on menus and links and makes for an all-around difficult and frustrating experience. Mobile sites clean that stuff up and make it easier and more pleasant to navigate.

But yes, it would take more than the current administrative attention to get anything like that done!

I'd like to see it.

Sadly me too... Which blows because I don't see this site lasting much longer if it doesn't change in one shape of form... Mobile platform or whatever... Something needs to change.

For people who would like to see it, you can find here: dpclite.altervista.org

The function available till now are

-Home page
-login/logout
-voting control (update button as well)
-preview of the already submitted picture to open contest
-full result of a contest (in pop-up, not a dedicated page)
-single picture opening with comments (also this in pop-up)
-chanche to set to helpful the comments (if your pic of course :) )
-vote page
-just a simple icon in the upper right page that shows if you have new message in inbox

The site should also have a pretty good layout in desktop mode, but of course it can be improved a lot.

Any feedback are welcome :)

Doom & gloom because it doesn't change to your expectations???

This always saddens me to see/hear this kind of thing. The site has remained a good and decent thing and hopefully there will be enough of us who see that and appreciate it to keep the doors open for a while yet.

I check my scores occasionally on my phone, and I actually have an entry in voting shot with it, but for the most part, my DPC activity is done on a desktop. I have three I use regularly.

It truly is not reasonable to view entries in voting on a cell phone. I remember the constant bitching, that went on for a number of years about the 700px limit because it just was *NOT* big enough to represent the impact necessary for viewing quality images.

Now you wanna look at 'em on a four inch screen? What a crock!

Personally, I think not being allowed to vote from cell phones is an absolute must. If someone is too lazy to get to a desktop and properly view entries, then they really shouldn't be doing this DPC thing. And I sure as Hell don't want bored lazy millennials voting my entries while sitting in a coffee shop. If that's what the answer is to keeping DPC alive, let it die. It's a photography site. If you can't be bothered to make some effort, then take your phone and go do something else.

This is a good place to learn and practice photography. It's got a multitude of ways that you can utilize it to keep you sharp, improve your skills, share techniques and info with other photogs the world over, and you don't have to do anything but practice and develop your skillsets. Why the constant whining and trying to change this or that? Use the plethora of what's here to improve.

Actually, despite I understand your skepticism about the voting from a mobile device (even if there are some tablets with much better screen than an old PC), I found the mobile version of the site useful for a lot of other functions like
- Look at open contests
- Check contests results
- Check votes of your submissions
- Interact with forum (not jet developed :-p)
- ...

Of course you can do it also with the standard version of the site, but why to use standard version if there could be a mobile version that make it better?

Since you posted the link I have been using your mobile version, it's wonderful. Please make an app.

Okay.....some qualifiers.....

I am not so attached to my phone that I feel that everything needs an app. I have Chrome on my phone, and when I screen it up, I always have a tab open for DPC. I don't feel the need to check my scores on it more than 30 or 40 times a day. Really....not that big a deal!

(I'm fine, really..... No obsession for me!)

If I want to quickly peruse the available challenges, it's right there.

I guess I just am sort of at a loss to see where an app gives me anything more than that. I remain signed in, and whatever page I was on last time I looked, there it is.

Help me out here...... How does a mobile version make it better if I have the site on my phone in a tab every time I open Chrome? I have my own website, DPC, and Google tabs open and ready every time I open it.

And again as to my qualifier, how does adding that make it better? It's merely extra bloatware in my phone from my POV.

As to skepticism about voting, it's an absolute sticking point with me that it's unfair to vote from what you see on a four inch screen. Especially after all the adamant squawking that was so prevalent about enlarging the size to 1200px from 700px.

YMMV

Yep. I'm setup the same way. Check the challenge subjects, dates, etc...

Opening DPC in Chrome on the phone, which I do, it comes up VERY small, unusable unless I enlarge it basically. Which of course I can do, but then I have to scroll to see the pieces, it's a relatively primitive experience. Ricardo's app, on the other hand, takes the parts I'm wanting to use and presents them in a no-frills, manageable size. Much easier to navigate... Apps that are designed for mobile users generally are just simpler and more intuitive than old-school websites displayed in miniature.

Actually I guess we are talking about different things here. I'm not talking about an app (even if MAK ask to do it :) ), I'm talking about another website (exactly the same thing you have already open in your mobile Chrome browser), but that have a better layout, so it is easier to check on the phone. No need to install other app, just open Chrome, go to the classical link (in case of my website of course is another address, already posted some post ago) and retrieve a mobile friendly version of the site. That's it :)

I haven't had a chance to explore the site properly yet, but I like the fact that I can read my score without having to zoom in like I do when I open the normal DPC site on my phone.

Yes, I must confess, it all started because when I submit a picture I like particularly, I'm "obsessive-compulsive" in checking scores :D

I really appreciate someone trying to move the site forward.

I am not keen on the gimmicky effects with the photos spinning etc - these would soon become very annoying.

Design wise I think it still needs work but I can see the potential improvement in the mobile view of the content.

There appears to be only one image visible when I view the site on my phone (which co-incidentally is my Horny Cow one today). For a photography site I would prefer the photographic content to have more presence even on the mobile view. There is too much vertical space taken up with the logo and navigation bar and the "Ended Challenges" banner - reduce these and make the photo bigger.

I appreciate it is not an easy task to design for mobile and you have made a great start though whether you are wasting your efforts if the site owner is not supportive of your efforts is another question.

I was about to write a response and noticed that my comments were identical to Paul's. On my iPhone 6s the photo is smaller than a postage stamp and the DPChallenge headers take up half the screen. Fortunately, the option to vote is not available on my phone, as like NikonJeb, I'm not a fan of people voting on an image which is so small, it would be like voting from the thumbnails on the desktop site.

Tried it and like it.
I didn't find how/ where to give comments on pictures.
The overview is TOP!!!

It seems like the opinion of voting on a mobile platform is split. And I do see both sides of the spectrum here. Trust me.

This is just a thought in my mind but is there maybe a way to lessen the impact of the votes on the phone vs a computer? Below is an example of what I mean.

Let's say an image is being voted on by 10 people... 5 on mobile and 5 on a computer... Could there be a way that the 5 that did the voting on the computer be counted as one entire vote each whereas the 5 who did it on mobile would be counted as .75 of a vote each? This would cause the "total" votes be 5 + 3.75 = 8.75 votes.

Big rule here with this idea - If you vote even 1 image with your mobile platform ALL of your votes would be considered .75 for that challenge. This would make sure there's not a scewed number for your votes having more of an impact on the ones you voted on a computer vs mobile...

The idea would give an incentive to vote on the computer while also giving the ability to at least make an impact on the image if you're unable to get to a computer to vote that week?

**Note this is just an idea so I don't know how the numbers would work**
***Or if it would work at all... Lol.***

ETA - P.s. - This idea may crash and burn if someone comes up with a logical reason as to why it wouldn't be fair (which I'm completely okay with as this just ran across my mind today).

I went and looked. I see the desirability of what it is for some. It simply isn't DPC. It is DPC lite, I get that, but even when I have a look on my phone, I do more than just check scores. So if it works for some, terrific.

BUT...

CAVEAT: This is *MY* opinion. I feel I can easily validate it.

It is absolutely, unequivocally impossible to properly view an image on a phone. And I am completely boggled after listening to so many people gripe for so long to have the image size increased from 700px to 1200px that the possibility of cell phone voting would even be considered.

Prolly ought to put it into a poll, and phrase it as such: "Are you okay with having your images viewed and voted upon by cell phone?".

One very distinct possibility I see as a bad thing is that people will whip out their phone and snap through a half dozen or so without taking the time to actually give the images their full attention.

I am decidedly *NOT* okay with that. I want someone to be parked in front of a decent size screen and be pretty much not distracted by things going on around them. I don't want mine to be one of twelve images flashed through on a cell phone 'cause someone has five minutes in the cafeteria at the end of a lunch break.

YMMV....

I understand this. I truly do. My biggest argument for this whole ordeal isn't that the quality of the voting will change (because I think we can all agree that it will), it is to keep the website alive in general. Sadly we live in a world of instant gratification which doesn't really help the argument. I understand that it doesn't make sense that we pushed through larger images just to turn around and vote via mobile. My big thing is this, if you give more people the power to vote, they will... Yes, I get that it won't be as "genuine" as if it was done on a computer screen. But at least you'll have DPC still. I'm not here to kill the voting (refer back to my idea of giving more weight to computer voters vs mobile voters), I'm here to keep the website going. I want this place to last for more than the next 3 years... And sadly with the way that the internet is headed it doesn't seem like it will last longer than that if we keep it the way it is. Just my opinion.
