I have a photo that just made the top 10% in a contest on Viewbug. I am not stating that to gloat or brag (well, maybe just a smidge), what I wanted to point out was that it came ahead of 459,385 other entries. I am kind of flabbergasted that this contest has about a half million entries.

Not expecting those kind of numbers here, you need some big money to run websites and advertising to gain that kind of traction, but the number of entries in challenges here just seems all that more, well, small. You would think that there has to be some way to get the numbers up here, with some small amount of effort on the part of management.

There has always been a small amount of effort. ;-)

Congrats on your Viewbug achievement. Is it a photo you can (or did) post in your portfolio here?

And how many of those entries were actually seen by anyone outside of the photographer's immediate circle? I think I'd rather be one of 40 entries than one of 400,000.

But congratulations on a top-ten (percentile) finish!

Yes, it was a challenge entry.

As far as the contest goes, they will be seen by voters, in a random fasion. You are highly unlikely to get to vote on images of someone that you know, and you can't pick which images to vote on. The voting seems to work through several rounds, you simply vote on sets of 4 randomly picked images from the challenge in rounds of around 5 (so 5 x 4 photos). You can choose 0 to 2 pics from each set of 4, so up to half the photos presented per round. I am not sure, but I assume then subsequent rounds are then based on the top X% from the previous rounds. Once you finish a round, you have the option to continue with another. In the end, the top X voted entries become finalists and the winners are decided by a jury.

It's a very different beast from this place.

What are the time limit rules? I can't find them.

Do they have to be taken during the time of the challenge?

No. The aren't really any rules, which seems to be the case for most challenge websites that I have looked at (which admittedly isn't many). This place is kind of unique for that, in a good way, IMHO.
