Shoshoni, WY forecast for 8-21-17. Optimal weather forecast. I won't have a "clouds" excuse.

I went form 60% to 40% to 30% to Sunny Skies!!! (Happy Dance!!!)

We just arrived at our destination...the campground is FULL!!! Gas prices got higher n higher the closer we got...don't know if it's because of the Eclipse or their just higher.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was in fact because of the eclipse. Gas is typically the first thing that skyrockets in price during events.

Just wait until everyone wants to fill up at the same time before rushing home ... :-(

I'm sure you already know this, but it's a TERRIBLE idea to store a jerrycan of gasoline in an enclosed space that heats up like a car or car trunk. You knew that, right? You're just funnin' us? You can carry it in a pickup truck bed or strap it onto the back of a utility vehicle, etc. I just feel obliged to say this in case anyone got ideas :-)

We're definitely gonna do a special challenge for this. The question is, how long of a posting window do we need to allow folks to get back from where they've gone and process their images. At first we thought "Speed Challenge" but that seems a bit extreme. Also, am I correct in assuming this should be Standard Editing, not Extended?

I'm in agreement with Janine... definitely Standard, no need for Extended, IMO. I'll be on the road for a week after the eclipse, but that's no reason I can't get something processed and submitted. That's *if* I get something worth submitting, LOL!

YOU are *required* to submit and we'll publicly mock you if you do not.

Can we add a flag to the challenge allowing composites? Not extended editing persay but composites?

I'm not sure this would have been a good idea as I'd think we'd then have seen the results dominated by time-lapse images of the eclipse.

Hangin' out in Rapid City SD this AM, having breakfast and about to head out through the Black Hills and points West. Should pass close to Richard's target area of Shoshoni, WY before heading into ID. Right now, my prime target is Western ID, weather looks hot but clear.

I have a mini-tripod from REI which has a Velcro strap which allows it to be clamped to fence post or similar item for extreme stability. You could also use something like a GorillaPod, though the flexible legs might not be as stable.

Give them a lat/lon location ... drone delivery. :-)

... ok, how about making a tripod from 3 stout sticks? Seriously. Google how to do a tripod lashing. It's easy. We teach the kids how to do it in Scouts ... 11 & 12 year-old figure it out pretty quick, shouldn't be a problem for someone as smart as you. :-D

Don't have rope? Have an extra pair of shoes? Use the laces. No? Some smaller vines (don't pick poison ivy!!!) will work too.

Make one of the legs a bit shorter than the other ones which will allow you to have something on top at an angled position (i.e. positioned skyward). If you make sure to put the lashing at a location about 6 inches from the top you will have a "platform" to put the camera on.

One is shaking one's head here wondering just what sort of photographer manages to forget to take a tripod along when traveling hundreds of miles to an eclipse gathering, but then I noticed who was writing and the light bulb went off :-)

(running for shelter as fast as I can)
