Greetings,

I have had a Canon 50D for the past 7 years. I would consider myself to be a photo enthusiast. I have found that I have not been taking as many pictures as I used to do to the weight of the camera. I am considering getting a mirrorless camera (perhaps the sony a5000 or the Canon M3)

I was just wondering what people thought of this, and what the quality increase/decrease would be going from my 50D to a basic to intermediate mirrorless camera.

Thanks in advance :)

I'm not going to weigh in on which mirrorless would be best, I have not done the research on them. I can say that you should not have to give up anything in image quality, rather you should have a net gain, higher resolution and dynamic range and lower noise. The Sony sensors are particularly good. The one area that you may perceive a drop in performance is AF speed, although I don't think it is going to be a big drop. You don't have a huge investment in Canon glass, so you could go almost any way you choose.

What's your price limit? Sony A6300 with Digma MC11 adapter allows you to use your Canon lenses with a super autofocus. A6300/A6500 have both a super autofocus, better than almost every APSC dslr and busrt of 11fps. Small compact RX100V has an impressive 24fps with 150 consecutive shots in jpeg.

what they said. your most important consideration would be lenses. (I am thinking of a similar change, though I always carry one or the other of 2 tiny cameras, the Ricoh GR -apsc sensor, 28mm, or the tinier Nikon P340, small sensor, 5x zoom starting at 24mm).

I'd moved almost exclusively to mirrorless for about 2 years, only carrying my 7D when I needed the range variation that my 18-200mm lens had to offer. Then I found the Tokina 10-17mm fisheye zoom for my Canon and it's back to carrying my DSLR almost everywhere I go.

I enjoy aspects like touch shooting on my mirrorless camera but still prefer a few aspects of my 7D - like better battery life. And I find the heavier camera much better to use in low light with my rather shaky hands.

OMD EM10 Mark II or Panasonic G85 or Panasonic GX85
All great cameras with great image quality, an increase of quality over your 50d
Lenses are light and there is a full range to choose from.
Shooting will become fun again.

Choose a twin kit lens or go for the full zoom kit lens.
Add a couple of fast primes.
Done

Thank you for the feedback so far. Price is a factor. I do need to keep it at or under $500. I do not have a big investment in glass for my canon, so switching brands / lens systems is not a concern.

Similar to what Gina and Tnun had mentioned I had been doing the 2 camera thing for a while... but its weighing me down and then i'm just not shooting. I could have the best camera in the world but if its too heavy for me to take with me and I wont use it then it doesn't matter how fabulous it is.

For a $500 budget i'd suggest skipping mirrorless compact system cameras and going for a high end compact. Alex suggested the Sony RX100V which would still be over budget but an earlier version such as the mk VI or III would be good. Or a Panasonic LX100 series. Great cameras; small, light and with great lenses on them.

If you definitely wanted the larger sensor of a CSC then a used Sony 6000 might fit with a bit left over for a lens.

Sell your current gear (you said you aren't using it due to size ... so sell it)
Work out what you want and then look for second hand.
Don't know where you are from but in the US you can buy refurb from Olympus and probably Panasonic which is something we don't have in Australia

X pro 1 still a great mirrorless it is light with a lens system in place but it is quite a bit larger than a pocket compact but smaller than a DSLR. Light to carry even with a 3 lens kit. In fact any of the Fuji X system cameras would be great and they all have that gorgeous Fuji colour.

I have had a 50D for a long time myself. About a year ago I bought a used Micro 4/3 Olympus for $250 with 2 lenses. The image quality is actually a little better with less noise than the 50D or any of my Rebels. I don't have the lens selection I did with the Canons however. I have loved the 18-135 on my Canon and want to get the Olympus 14-150 for a similar all in one option. Also want a wideangle for it.
