Perhaps then I can create my own version of one the worlds most expensive photo ;) (I'm a bit in a sarcastic funk today but do not mean any disrespect to the OP)

@21_N.gif Techo - No offence taken.

For clarity I imagined products mainly or partially in their packaging setup in a traditional still life setting (at home or in studio?) rather than still on the supermarket shelf.

yes, I thought that was your intent - traditional set up, but I like the latitude implied in your original post: so, either way, in store or in studio or wherever is your shooting range. minimal is always a challenge...

I just shoot in the store. Trader Joe's is my favorite haunt for that. :)

Course this is not minimal - just happened to have done it for my club's "Out Of Place" scavenger hunt.

They LET you do that? Every time I've tried it in my supermarket I get stopped. But I've never tried it in Jose's...

Trader Joe is quite the unique place. I think they really pride themselves on customer service. I recently learnt that you can ask to try any product on the shelf before buying, so them allowing photography isn't that much of a surprise. I usually go there for the bear gummies and interesting selection of British candy oh and the odd frozen pizza. That's my Trader Joe shopping list 99% of the time.

Yah, they're a fascinating store. I've been shopping them since the first store in Pasadena in 1967, and we finally got one on Cape Cod a few years ago. I just never tried to take PICTURES in one, since the supermarkets always slap me down. The rationale given is "industrial espionage"; apparently it's a cutthroat business...

With smartphones these days it's just weird to have that, at the very least, in the big stores. It's so easy to snap a quick one when there's no one else in huge aisle. The security cam watchdogs probably don't even see it worth the fuss to enforce the "no picture taking" rule. Seeing someone trying to carefully compose a shot , does make me look twice these days. Mostly to stop by and say Hi ;) If I see anyone walking around with a DSLR around my neighborhood, that person is totally my insta buddy. So watch out! hehe. Long story short: I had been on a tour that prohibited photography. My tour guide was very strict. The other tour group had people taking photos with their iPads while I stand there visually drooling and not able to do a thing about it. I snuck in one cellphone shot. Just for memory.

I've never tried with a camera - I just use my phone. I go there once a week to pick up a salad or two for lunch at work. And get the wee cup of coffee in the back. And to pick up mints. And chocolate wedges. And sometimes cookies. :-)
