I'm thinking the Poem challenge might have inspired far more voter participation had it been the first line of a limerick that required finishing instead of asking us to write and post an entire poem based on the title. If people didn't want to read titles last week (as is apparently their habit) I can't imagine them wanting to write poetry as well.

I would have said something much sooner
Had I not spent last week on a schooner
With no WiFi in site
I'm now left with this plight
Of no one to vote on my ballooner

(OK, I tried a little too hard there)

Since most Limericks are "titled" with their first lines ("There was an old salt from Nantucket...") there's no reason you can't do exactly what you're describing :-)

And if you're interested in limericks you should go here ... :-)

Sorry - I don't understand the description of the poem challenge.
Does the title have to be the first line of an already existing (famous) poem? What if nobody knows the poem choosen by the photographer?
Or is it that voters are encouraged to create a poem which fits to the picture as well as to the title (given by the photographer)? So I might just invent a first line and wait if voters have enough energy and fantasy to go on?
Or can it be either way?

IMO it can be either, but I also think the idea is for the voters to complete the poem as part of their comment, and for the photographer to put their version in the notes, for later comparison.

That's the way I originally read it, and I thought we were supposed to put the entire poem in the description. Not sure if the description changed the first day, but from what I read now I can't understand why that would be. Now it's essentially another Free Study with an invitation to act as muse to folks who don't comment anyway.

And while I like this, without this verbiage in the challenge description you'll, at best, get the 5 or 6 people who actually read the forum posts to do it.

All that's required is a title. You don't have to write a poem in the description if you don't want to. Just imagine a poem you'd like to see and give us a title.

hey! some could even do selfie - but then might have to find rhyme for words like nitwit, lamebrain, sadsack, nolife, turdburgler, dorksnork, mushtush, shartfart... better get working, you only have 10 days!

Perhaps the value of the Poem challenge, as it stands, is that you get the title, you get the photo, you form your own opinion, and you can look up the text of the poem, or wait, but its multi-dimensional.

My interpretation of the description was you are to come up with your own potential poem title for your image rather than pairing the image with an existing poem. Then, rather than look up a poem, voters are encouraged to actually use the image and title as inspiration to then write their own poem in their comment.
