Incredible drone footage of endangered whales feeding off New Zealand. This is a POV that's just fabulously informative, and it's mesmerizing to watch.

Whew! Now I get it.

When I first saw this footage... it was telling me that it was a whale feeding her offspring.

I never saw the offspring (appropriately) and searched for it the whole time.

Now I get it.

Thanks, Bear.

This is beautiful.

Actually, when you saw 2 whales, the smaller one WAS her offspring. I guess mama taught him well :-)

Great video. Thanks!

You know, it made me think...the ocean is a kind of a weightless environment, right? So...what if extraterrestrials (who are always depicted as elongated & thin) were as big as whales?

I come from a subculture of SF addiction where, indeed, they often ARE. And bigger! Sometimes the alien literally occupies the space between stars as an immense consciousness. For that matter, arguably, the earth Herself has consciousness, or at least awareness, and WE are the aliens, sort of. Back to the whales now, lovely beasts that they are :-)

Larry Niven's "Known Space" stories explore both aliens from various environments, but also how humans might adapt to conditions on other worlds. "Chthon" by Piers Anthony explores the idea of a living planet ...

Footage is great (if choppy on my computer), though I'm a bit surprised there hasn't already been similar footage from a helicopter or plane ...

Well great minds think alike, then! I'm intrigued & will do more reading.

Everything has consciousness. It's possible that a whale's consciousness includes an awareness of humans that would amaze us, if we could comprehend it. Maybe these whales were aware they were being observed & just didn't mind.

Yah, for sure. Whales like that, Baleen whales, are basically the equivalent of herbivores on land, even though the masses of Krill they ingest are part of the animal world. And, functionally, they live in a predator-free world, if you exclude man. My point being, I guess, that if I was a peaceful herbivore the size of a whale I doubt I'd even notice something like a drone at 200 feet, or give a hoot about it if I did :-) I've spent a fair amount of time around California Gray Whales, and an encounter always raises the hair on my arms. I'm fascinated by whales.
