So, I went ahead and got myself an early Christmas present. I found the Sigma 150-600mm Sports lens, with Sigma USB dock for $1700 (sued - like new condition).

Just got it in the mail today. This thing is massive! Like so big that I'm glad I have been carrying around twin kids for 20 months to bulk up. I'm not sure that it will fit in my backpack!

But it looks pretty cool. At work now, so unlikely to get much in the way of photos today. I will try to post some this weekend.

In the mean time, I will be lifting weights...

Just got a couple minutes to play around a bit.

Here is the Sigma 150-600 next to the Canon 100-400

Here is the moon, shot at 400mm, then 600 mm. No adjustments applied

Here is the moon, shot at 400mm, then 600mm, cropped exactly to the same dimensions. No other adjustments applied.

Finally, the 600mm sharpened. I think I could have gotten sharper out of camera if I had more time and it wasn't so damn cold out :)

Place it horizontally and add some spoked wheels and it'll look like a cannon ... :-)

I've found that the one advantage of shooting in cold weather is that the air seems clearer.

The unadjusted 600mm shot looks like I wish my Moon photos looked (my lens is about a 400mm equivalent, but not so good, esp. on a tiny sensor).

I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with the new toy -- just remember to lift with your legs and not your back ...

Every review i read of Sport vs. Contemporary version of this lens said that both have very similar image quality and that Sport model offers more rugged construction but that's about the main difference. Like this review here...

Some shooting this morning. It sure is heavy. Hard to hold when looking up. But if I can rest against something, I'm good. And the image stabilization is decent.

Here is a leaf on the ice. Shot at 600mm, and I applied some denies/sharpening because I was shooting at 3200 ISO

Next we have two shots, both handheld. The first is a cattail, in low morning light, so I was at 1/40s. Being 600mm, that means image stabilization really had to work. The second I had the sun rising, so I was able to use a much quicker shutter.
Both shots are unedited in any way, to give a better representation of the lens itself.

Finally, at 320mm I had a little more leeway with the shutter. A little editing applied.

All of these are best viewed full size (which is actually 50% of full size, to save space in my portfolio.

Congrats on your new Sigma lens, certainly looks like a beast.

I could never lug that around but I do miss the ability to zoom right in. Enjoy.

Nice moon shots.

I have a Nikon D610 I use with a normal zoom but would love to get a giant one like yours.

However, I also have the Nikon P900. It has an 85x optical zoom.

I took this one today through a piece of welders mask plastic. Although the color was green and the edges were not sharp, I was able to fix it up by correcting the color and just cutting off the very outer edge to give it the sharp look.

Everything else is what came out of the camera.

I rented the Tamron 150-600 for Nikon and yes, it is a BEAST. I think the Sigma is a better lens.

I recently acquired the Tamron 150-600 and am quite surprised by its IQ even at 600mm. Of course its much lighter than Sigma Sport and the tripod collar can be taken off saving more weight as well. Its quite hand hold-able. Here are two shots i took hand-held @600mm on 70D thus making these effectively 960mm equivalent:

[Edited to use sharpened version of the moon shot]
