I'm relatively new to all of this. I took a class on photography in high school, loved it but never did anything with it and I have a lot to learn so I thought I would start here! If you have any tips for a beginner let me know! I have some shots I would love to get opinions on! They look good to me but I don't know much about proper lighting and things like that I started with a Nikon Coolpix and now I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-Fz200. Thank you for any and all helpful tips, tricks and suggestions! This is one that I like the most and I'm going to get it on a canvas wrap for my family back home for Christmas. I hope the link works. I know I need to do some editing on it but I don't know how yet. That was taken in Auburn NH

Welcome, hope you enjoy it here. Best way to learn is to enter challenges and perhaps request a critique. There are also side challenges that are fun and another good place to get feedback and try different things. Good luck and hope to see some of your images soon. Oh and by the way I could not open the image.

Welcome!!! I was able to get my first start here as well along with some awesome friends as mentors, there is a lot of expertise here and all you have to do is ask :-))

It is always a learning thing always, My huge thing was to learn the camera, know how it works, learn how to change the settings, know what things are, tons of free tutorials to go through as well as learning the basics, understand ISO, Shutter speed and aperture, DOF and how it works together, after a yr of the DLSR, my Ah ha moment lightbulb just came on for that alone just within the last few months.. It took me way longer to finally understand it all together..I knew what they did desperately but all together was another book.

I was too worried about editing part of things.. half of the battle is getting it right in the camera with the correct exposure and compositions, I kinda had it backwards for a very long time.. Learn what works for you and go with it, break rules and shoot what you love to shoot, we have light room experts here as well as photoshop experts so the editing will be a fun learning process for you as well.

One step at a time and you will get it :-) Look forward to watching your progress as you learn, that is a fun part. Have fun!

Welcome to the zoo, Eric!

I'm afraid your link doesn't work, but now that you've uploaded some photos, you can simply click on the pretty little icon at the right hand side (while you're in a posting window, that is). The icon is called "Insert portfolio photo".

I think you're trying to show us this one:

I'd start by turning it the right way up :-)

This is the smartest photography move you will ever make. Welcome, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Keep in mind that scores are a relative thing, and don't let them get to you if they're not as high as you think they should be.

Enter side challenges for less stress and no scores!

And of course, enter the regular challenges. Just make sure you read all the editing rules.

Now go make sure your camera is set to the right time and date. More DQs have been given for that reason alone :)

Welcome aboard, Rolf! That image has atmosphere :-) Needs to be rotated, of course, but it has atmosphere, and that's a great place to be. Don't be afraid to speak up. Enter challenges. Vote! Make comments! Get in the swim of things... You'll probably be disappointed by your scores, at least in the beginning, but you'll learn what works and what doesn't in this microcosm.

Welcome, Rolf. That photo is really lovely (when I turn my head on side). I'm looking forward to seeing your challenge entries - and as mentioned, side challenges are a good place to try things out.

Welcome to DPChallenge.
I see you shoot with an iPhone for the most part. Don't be afraid to tinker with the settings.

It looks like you are already finding scenes where the color and light are worthy of photographing.

There are a lot of editing programs out there, but it would probably be a good idea to start by learning about one of the more popular ones.
The reason being that there are a lot of videos and information about using therm on the web to learn from.

I think you can probably rotate the images in your phone, camera or computer with even the simplest of editing programs before you upload them to DPC.
You can preview images you want to post by uploading them to your DPC "Workshop" first, then move them to your portfolio. Find it in the dropdown under "My Home" in the header tool bar on any DPC page.

Earphones with a click switch on them can be used for a remote shutter release with your iPhone.

Enjoy your visits here. If you enter the challenges, don't worry too much about the scores here for a while. Desire is a large part of learning how to shoot good pics, and you seem to have that or you would not be here.

Thank You everyone! sorry about the two sideways pictures they are oriented correctly on my computer I'm trying to figure out how to fix it! Does anyone have some quick tips on editing? Essentially the main things that should be done to improve picture quality?
11/27/2015 04:45:19 AM · #11
Welcome Eric! That didn't take you long to jump into this.
11/27/2015 12:15:58 PM · #12
I see you took down the couple of photos posted with the orientation off.

If they don't upload to your "workshop" page in the same orientation that they show on your computer, you could try rotating them 90 deg so that they are wrong on your computer, but might upload to the correct orientation on the webpage.
It's a "hack" sort of workaround for the problem, but might work until you get the issue solved with a better fix.

I don't think there is an option to reorient an image once it's been uploaded to DPC, except to replace it by uploading the same image in correct orientation.

It would help if ppl here knew what you were using for editing and uploading, so that they could give more specific suggestions about solutions.

Welcome!
I have found the people here and their images to be inspiring. I truly enjoy competing against real talent as well.

Some quick thoughts:

Here, one thing I would recommend doing is finding images that you like and investigating how they were taken/made. If you go to Photos/browse there are categories you can use for exploring images here.

Another thing you can do here is explore the How'd they do that? and Tutorialspostings.

And if you are wanting to have fun without feeling the pressure of getting a score, look into Side Challenges - some of these are just exploring a genre of photography or editing images.

As far as what you are doing now, I would recommend you use a good tri-pod when appropriate. Others can articulate why.
In all honesty, I don't use a tri-pod for most of my images. But it looks like you enjoy landscapes and that is a genre that will likely benefit from a tripod because your subject isn't on the move. It will also force you to take your time and explore the scene a bit when setting up.
I personally like landscapes with some foreground in them to bring the viewer more into the scene - MHO for what it is worth.

Finally, one tip that hardly anyone wants to hear: read your camera's manual =)

Hope to see more photos from you soon!

Eric what program do you use for editing right now? That way those equipped with the knowledge can help :0)

11/27/2015 09:50:14 PM · #15
Right now I'm using ACDSee Pro9 but I'm open to suggestions for programs! Sometimes I use the program that came with my camera PHOTOfunStudio 8.3 PE because it automatically downloads my photos when I throw a card in.

Welcome, Eric!

This is a great place for newbies... or for experts...and everyone in between.

My suggestion for you is to ... enter.

Enter every challenge.

And then... comment on every entry in every challenge.

That's how I learned... by looking at every entry... and learning what I liked... and didn't like... about every entry. I saw it as I said it.

Welcome again!

Be VERY careful about these automatic functions. Any image with validation requested (i.e. the top 5 placers, or if someone thinks a rule violation has occurred and requests validation) requires an original, UNALTERED file. Failure to provide that file, or if the original has been altered by a download program, are an automatic DQ.

WARNING WARNING WARNING !!!!!!! You are probably looking at a disqualification on your very first submission.

When we enter a challenge, sometimes we are asked by SC to send in our original so they can make sure we are playing by the rule. They have a magic program that knows if you cheated or not (i.e. if the EXIF info looks wrong).
However, sometimes that program gets tricked into thinking you cheated, when all you did was to let some program import your photos and change the EXIF file a little.

So, don't do it. Manually copy the photos off the card and make sure to leave that original untouched. Only play with a copy.

Edited to add:

I took too long..... walked away in the middle of typing for a bit, so I got beaten to the point. Never mind, now you heard it twice LOL.

Yes, please do not use that program LOL!

The best app to use for the phone would be lightroom *they have it for the phone I just downloaded mine kinda fun, or snapseed is what I Have used the most. I really hate editing on my phone so I try to never do it lol

For the PC lightroom or photoshop.

oo and also remember no watermarks on your images...

my first image was an auto DQ with watermarks hahaha, it was removed within the first few days but as you see tons of 1's

Most challenges are Advanced editing- here is the rule page
Rules

Also, feel free to reach out, many here have gotten my foot wet with the editing can be very mind boggling at first but after a while it will click.. we can help ya through and I still get help to this day because I have an issue with colors .... and if you have any questions please feel free to ask us, message us, but do not post your image in the forums if you plan on submitting it for a challenge, you can also help yourself to posting your image after a challenge as well to ask for help on how you would edit a photo to get more feedback from others :0)

Snapseed is fun to play with, but much of what it does is not "legal" under our Advanced Editing Rules, so be careful. It's a good idea to read those rules then ask questions if there's any part you don't understand.
11/28/2015 04:42:22 PM · #23
Eric, did I forget to tell you that there are rules? Oh well, we will work on that!
11/28/2015 06:39:00 PM · #24
Oh please do yourself a favor & read the rules.

The iPhone automatically turns everything right side up. But only for Apple devices. For a PC it's still not right side up.
