So, I'm reading over my son's advanced history class stuff this morning and come across this gem... "Extra credit - For extra credit 1. Write about a current event from CNN.com or FoxNews.com or 2.Watch a History channel show and write a brief one page summary of that show. Please make sure the show is appropriate, as some shows on the History channel can be purely for entertainment and not educational purposes." Does anyone else see the irony here?

A better assignment would be to watch a report on CNN and Fox News and write a paper comparing the two.

eh, much ado about nothing. they are telling the kids to write about real events not fictional period pieces.

Does fox cover real events? I thought they were for entertainment purposes only. :D

In case you're wondering how CNN compares...

Last Thursday I was on my way home form work and i like to listen to conservative radio from time to time just to hear the talking points and the guy who does afternoon drive isn't all that bad.

anyway, i caught the very, very end of Rush Limbaugh, when he finished his radio show said, and i paraphrase "tune in tomorrow, there is a lot of crazy stuff going going on but dont worry 'I'll tell you how to feel about it'".

i know i should be appalled by that, but it didn't shock me one bit. He knows his followers are sheep and he is just preying on the fears and emotions for ratings.

Exactly.

I'm not freaking out about this by any means. I just thought it was funny that a teacher would point an impressionable teen towards fox news, when it's been pointed out time and again that they make stuff up, yet tell them specifically to make sure the history channel shows aren't just for entertainment. To me, fox is entertainment. On the rare occasion I'm forced to watch it (such as at a doctors office), it blows my mind that anyone with any kind of intelligence can believe it.

if they didn't put fox news as an alternative, I'm parent would be in an uproar over its exclusion. Notice MSNBC was exempt from mention.

education is shit now anyway, so much is done to stem parent reaction. they should be inviting reaction and initiating discussion.

ClusterFOX, aka Roger Ailes, is absolutely brilliant...just like Limbaugh. They've researched and embraced what sells to the masses (entertainment)....willful ignorance, fear, propaganda and whatever else they need to sway people who've made a point NOT to educate themselves. It's that simple...and, it's brilliant.

The link you posted, Kelli, proves it. A "news" organization doesn't tell the truth only 41% of the time. This is a no-brainer. MSNBC...the lowest in ratings and very liberal....spins and exaggerates like a mutha...but, they don't lie in order to change someone's mind. Being honest isn't cool these days.

As a parent, whatever YOUR values are will be transmitted to your kids in far more abundance than whatever they learn in school. That's a GOOD thing.....unless it's a bad thing. :-D

They should have told the kids to go to bed, record the Daily Show, and watch it the next day. There's more useful information about the news on that show then in several hours of "news" itself.

Or heck, watch a legit documentary ...

i'm partial to This Week Tonight with John Oliver. The daily show, while effective at pointing out the joke that the news is, just makes people cynical and complacent to our problems

80% being half-true or better is not something to be applauded. Yes, it is better than the 39% at Fox, but (for me) the goal should be "true". Not mostly true. Not half true. In the true category, Fox is 10% and CNN is 15%. Not all that different... Just maybe more of what you want to hear?

I don't watch either one.

"Web site design"? I'd sort of like to run this answer through the Truth-O-Meter ...

A: That’s currently not an option in our website design. It may become available in the future, and if it does, it’s something we might consider.
