You want examples? I don't even have to leave the front page of the forum to point to Snapshot and Morning as perfectly reasonable alternatives that pose no artificial boundaries to entry.

I'm glad you agree we can't have a completely free playing field but your examples are nothing more than free studies imho and Morning isn't really that much different from The golden Hour is it? am guessing if you enter morning you'll stay away from the hour after sunrise?

As for Mike and his shot, you can't DQ an image that hasn't broken any rules surely?

You want the challenges to be challenging in the playoffs, for sure, so use something that levels the playing field and let the cream rise. To your example, Iron Chef does just that - everybody gets the same Sea Urchin and the same pantry. This came with a randomly imposed handicap that would be more akin to a souffle challenge where some get eggs and butter and some get a carton of egg beaters and a can of Crisco. Win or lose this souffle's left a bad taste in my mouth for over a week now.

Well my Iron Chef analogy referred to the Shopping Cart which was a bizarre but equalizing ingredient.

But I still think Golden Hour is reasonable and fair. You can poke huge holes in every topic - "Morning" cuts out everyone who works M-F or doesn't have the macro skills to shoot milk drops into coffee. Snapshot is more geared to those that live in cities or have models. Obviously it's not perfect but with each team having 7 or 9 members and 14 opportunities across the globe and its varying climates to find a magic hour shot, I don't think its anything to get worked up over. In fact, I thought the planning and discussions as our team members looked at the weather and made plans to shoot was great. It's all for the fun in the end is it not?

"Morning III" is not part of DPL anyway. The Finals start on tomorrow's rollover, once we have seen the results of the semifinals. So the two final challenges for DPL will be the challenges announced at rollover tomorrow and this coming Sunday.

Are you actually proud of that fact or are you just saying more people could have shot whenever they wanted?

I can't figure out why you would let on about it.

the challenge was golden hour, there was no time restriction on when it could have been shot. i shot mine about an hour before golden hour started because had i waited for the real golden hour my subject would have been cast in a shadow and it would not have been nearly as good.

the point i'm making is you shoot to meet the challenge and sometimes that means taking liberties on certain aspects of it.

And anyway, that's a tiny liberty. The image "reads" as a classic, backlit golden hour shot and you did, in fact, shoot it in late afternoon light. For what it's worth, the golden hour lasts more than an hour on summer evenings :-)

Photography (in my view) is about making the viewer FEEL something.

If someone can make the viewer feel or think that the image was taken at the golden hour... when it's noon... I don't care.

More power to them!

That's my opinion. We all have ours.

We all have our time constraints that we have to deal with to fit DPC into our lives. I vote and comment on images as I see them presented to me on my monitor... not on the "truth"... I vote on what they present to me... If I believe it... or not... I don't think there's any crime in someone trying to convince me of something that's not true.

I like images. :D

maybe it was a small liberty, but its still a liberty when the initial complaint was that there were only 14 available hours to shoot. one of our team members almost entered a shot that was shot under a street light, without knowing that backstory you'd have no idea, it looked like perfect golden hour lighting.

The challenge description clearly says one hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset. I do trust people regard the rules. So you fooled me.

The "challenge description" is not a "rule" ... think of the title and description (if any) as inspiration or guidelines, not "rules".

Bit of a glitch - seems I still can't vote on teammates' photos, even though we're not playing anymore. I'll assume that once the system is set up, it stays that way until everything is complete?

I think the people who vote DNMC, in general, would say that the images they vote as not meeting the challenge are not meeting the "rules".
I will add that I don't generally call out DNMC because I prefer to tag the images I enjoy.. challenge in mind but not withstanding. My top scores will be for those I enjoy most, regardless.

That's correct. Too risky to try to tweak it mid-stream, bearing in mind what happened week 2. We'll try to fix it before DPL4.

I have no idea what happened in week 2, but I'll take your word for it. :-)

I took off my liberty bodice one year and it was only March.

Yes, "Morning" is very much different than "Golden Hour" in that it allows you to capture any aspect of the morning both inside and outside, in any weather and at any time. You'd likely get a lot of Golden Hour shots given the typical things people post, but you remove the necessity of that time and light. And me, personally, I'd very much stay away from that type of shot and likely go with... well, you'll see in a week, won't you.

As for Mike's shot, you obviously missed the 'wink' at the end - his team and mine are locked in battle this week.

emphasis mine, that's the point of the description, to capture the aspect of the topic, unless there is a hard rule put in place that requires a timed capture, it doesn't matter when you take it and it and fooling the subject is irrelevant.

maybe if your team did a better job planning you'd have performed better instead of the nervous whining you are engaging in.

We just did it here because no one seems to want to use the Trash Talk thread for that purpose.
