Well, I've sold my Canon DSLR. Needed the cash. Now I'm looking at buying a used GH4 with an adapter for my Canon glass until things get more financially stable. Was wondering if anyone has shot portraits with M4/3 camera and how it compared?

Sure, people shoot m4/3 all the time and get great results. But if you still have your Canon glass, you might be happier with an older Canon body. Remember that the crop factor for your lenses will be 2x, so most of your Canon lenses will be pretty long on m4/3, and most Canon to m4/3 adapters are either expensive or don't have any electronics.

That said, a used Olympus 45mm f/1.8 might be just the ticket. You won't get image stabilization, but you'll get a very nice native m4/3 lens, and they're readily available cheap on the used market.

Sure you can, if you want IS look at the Olympus cameras, I love my EM1 and EM5. There are several types of adapters you can get but having aperture control on your EF lenses is something that is difficult. Metabones has one but it has lots of drawbacks. Kipon is about to release one that they claim will give autofocus, waiting to see the reviews on that. Highly recommend you visit the m4/3 Forum where you can get lots of answers. There are a number of us over there that use adapted lenses on our cameras, I only use FD lenses so not up on using EF lenses. Now if that Kipon adapter ends up working well (Metabones has tried and failed) that could change.

Forgot to mention lots of portrait people like the Olympus 75mm but it's expensive. People say good things about the Sigma 60mm and it is around $200.

I have a couple of recent candid street portraits I shot with m43 as challenge entries and there's a H&S shot about a year ago I did with a m43 camera and an adapted 50mm FD lens. Regarding equivalency, an f1.4 lens on a m43 camera will give the equivalent DOF of f2.8 on a 35mm camera. Exposure wise 1.4 is the same for both formats, only the DOF characteristics change.
Just make sure the GH4 has focus peaking, I think it does. It makes a huge difference when manually focusing lenses, which you'll probably be doing with EF lenses.

Hello Jason, good to see you still around dude.

I ditched the DSLR long ago and have never been happier. Portraits are all about the Photographer, the M4/3 system is very capable of shooting stunning portraiture with the right glass on it. I do recommend selling that Canon glass in favour of some Voigtlander 0.95 lenses for M4/3 you only need a 3 lens kit and you're good to run and it will all weight less than your old Canon DSLR on its own.. you can then enjoy using adapted lenses from a bygone age and get very creative and in total control again.. I am so happy with manual focus and a lighter system..

Thanks for input everyone.

I guess I should look at ditching the Canon glass for some M4/3 so long as I don't spend more than I sell.

I loved my Canon gear, but times are tough. Gotta make some sacrifices but still want to be able to do some nice portrait work and some walk-around shoots.
