Well P-A-U-L, it was all about Leica and monochrome ;-) And drinking coffee and tea. And lunch. We almost forgot to walk. Therefore I bought myself some T-Shirts, to show the folks at home where I've been :-)
But it's been a great day, we should do it again another time (and another place).

I was looking for an m-mount wide in the 25-28mm range and after researching a lot about the problems a lot of them have on the Sony i read that some of the older pre-asph tend to do a lot better and i really liked the sound of the Mandler designed 28mm Elmarit version 3 from the 1980's so i ordered one of those. Unfortunately the shop had made a mistake and had already sold that one and accidentally sent me an older, quite battered 28mm Elmarit version 2 from the 70's and it was terrible. Not sure if it was because of the battered condition or that the version 2 doesn't have a very good reputation anyway. It was pretty unusable wide open to 5.6 or so. Everything a blurry mess. So i sent that right back and went with an earlier plan of getting a Nikon mount Zeiss 28mm f/2 Distagon. It was one of my initial plans but then i started having second thoughts about the size and weight but now it's arrived it really isn't too bad. It's still lighter and slightly shorter with the adaptor than the new Sony 35mm f1.4 for example. It's a really lovely lens and i'm glad it's the one i ended up with to be honest.

Of course, that experience hasn't put me off Leica lenses. I love my 75mm f2.5 Summarit but am having some thoughts about something faster. That 75mm f1.4 Summilux looks mighty fine!

I find it weird you had bad luck with the 28mm Elmarit. I had the same lens and really regret selling it.. I replaced it with a Voigtlander 28 Ultron (fantastic lens) but my real passion at the moment is with vintage glass from the late 30's, very cheap (for leica glass) and yet render is beautiful. my current Hektor 2.8cm f6.3 sounds like a nightmare but is small as a button and has timeless character.

There is a gorgeous Elmarit 28mm on FB for sale at £700 and RedDot has one also for a bit more.

Well, i suspect it might have been just the condition. The shop, Richard Caaplan, have put it sale now for £399 which probably gives a clue into its condition. I couldn't get anything in focus at all at f2.8 and can't believe even that version - the less regarded version 2 - could be that bad so something may have been knocked out somewhere. The version 3 or 4 both look great and i would have been happy with either (the newest asph version is quite bad on the Sony's though). Nevermind - i'm more than happy with the Zeiss f/2 which has its own special qualities - an earlier version of the design used to be known as the 'Hollywood' as its extreme field curvature makes it a very cinematic lens and film makers snapped them up to adapt for film. Just the sort of lens i was after and the very short mfd is very useful indeed.

I'm still thinking about updating my Leica 75mm Summarit f2.5 to something faster though. The Summilix is probably out of my price range at the moment but maybe the Summicron or i might try an older 90mm Summicron or something. Saying that though, that's definitely on my 'want but not need' list as now i have my 28mm i'm pretty much set for the wedding season. I'll see how the Summarit goes and then maybe update at the end of the year.

Ha sounds like you had a great day. The people on the island will be very impressed with your London t-shirts:)

Look forward to seeing some photos you guys took when you get around to it.

I'm thinking of selling my Summilux 80mm 1/4 R - an optical twin of the 75mm f/1.4 Summilux. I feel I have portraits covered with my 50mm f/0.95 with a close-up adapter. Its lack of rangefinder coupling would be a non-issue on your Sony...

That's another one that i've been thinking about. If you decide to sell i might be interested. Might not be able to afford it for a while though - unless you do hire/purchase!

Hi Folks, apologies, my train was delayed so I arrived at the meet point late. I hung around for a short while looking for likely groups of people, but there were endless groups, most with camaras! I guessed that I had missed you and headed off to grab a few photographs.
Having now seen the image that you've posted, I realise that I actually caught up with you at Hays Galleria, as I recognise the hat (MAK I think).
I'm disappointed to have missed you all, but hopefully there will be another London meet soon and I will make sure I get there on time and get to put faces to names.

Oh no! That's such a shame. I think we waited until 12.15 - sorry. We only thought to share mobile numbers quite a bit into the day. We should have thought of that before.

I'm disappointed not to have met you, hopefully you had a good day's shooting.

Sorry again

No apology required Paul, I was the one that was late. I'm sorry I kept you guys hanging around. Exchanging mobile numbers is certainly a great idea for next time.

I had a great day anyway. Only made it along the south bank as far as the Millenium Bridge, then crossed the river and wandered around the city for a while. London is such a great venue. So much to see and shoot.
