For some time, I have wanted to resubmit an earlier entry just to see how voting trends have changed. Nine years without a DQ, though, I never could pull the trigger. My gut was that tastes have changed, with HDR and heavy post-processing now ruling.

The Botany challenge gave me the opportunity to recreate an earlier entry and compare the results.

My first entry from 2006 (flowers challenge ):

My entry from Botany:

I agree that my 2006 entry was better. I put more time and effort into it, and it is better. But 6.8244 vs 5.5714?

Times have changed.

Composition/styling on your 06 entry is 100% better. Very graceful in the way the branch sweeps up and through the frame. Overall softer lighting as well make it more attractive to my eye.

First score was too high and second one too low. But surely first image was much better than the other. Composition in the old image was almost perfect.

That shot is still on your front page.
I wasn't here on 06 but if you put your 06 entry in this last Botany challenge I think I would have given it an 8.

Your 06 image to me is head and shoulders over the latest one.
What really turned me off about your latest shot is on the bottom right the cloned out branch didn't fully disappear. When I look at the shot I keep getting drawn to the ghost branch.

the first image is one point higher than the second, in my mind.

The composition of the first image is ten times better. Also I'm not sure if a black background is now considered 'out of fashion'. I've never used it for the simple fact that most people do!!

Being honest, I think the received scores reflect what I would have given either image.

lighting, balance, composition - it's ALL way better in your original.
the plant itself in the new image looks WAY less appealing in addition to the lighting difference (darker darks, brighter white areas, too "all over the place").

you forgot the border.
