So I ran a firmware update and didn't notice it had changed my camera date to 2013; set the other things but wasn't paying close enough attention.

I got some photos I think are pretty cool when shooting for the 30 second challenge last night, and since I can't submit them (I shot something quite different tonight, and will enter it) I figured I'd post the photos and some quick notes on how I did them.

The tool I used was a battery powered light stick about 6 inches long; hardware stores sell them.

This one was my favorite, I waved the stick around pretty close to the camera after the shutter was open and walked away to about 15 feet from the camera, then held the stick by the end of the lanyard and made some sort of figure eight patterns and just spun it around in various ways. I tucked it into my jacket when I was ready to walk back and shut off the camera.

For this one, I spun it around in big circles holding the stick in my hand and spinning around keeping my feet in the same spot more or less. For the small loops, I held it by part of the lanyard and just spun it around a bunch of times. At the end I kept spinning it in a circle as I walked toward the camera.

For this one I started out about 15 feet from the camera and spun it around with my finger sticking out so the lanyard would wrap around my finger as it spun, then reversing directions when it was out of room. I just slowly walked towards the camera during the exposure. I also light painted the concrete down the middle where the seam is with a flashlight.

I think these light sticks are a good tool for some fun and interesting photos, and they're pretty cheap and easy to use. If anyone wants to try it out and has any questions I'd be happy to help.

I used the same tool in my forced perspective entry, and just spun it around in big circles while I ran around like a fool in the dark:

Wow, these are gorgeous, I like your fav best too. Sounds like fun.

Sooo...the firmware 'update' was from 2013? "D

Ok. You've convinced me.

I'm not entering. :D

maybe best to have waited till after the challenge had run its course?

Forum rules (#2) prohibit these outtakes until after the voting phase has been completed.

The forum rules are intended to prohibit posting of outtakes during the voting period, to avoid distracting attention from the actual entries.

However, people often post examples of suitable shots during the challenge discussion in the pre-voting/submission phase, usually but not necessarily from previous challenges or photo-shoots.

In this case, it seems OK to post the pictures as examples of what can be accomplished within the challenge guidelines, but the thread will probably be hidden once the challenge moves into the voting phase.

that's what I first thought -- but I don't see these as outtakes as much as "how to"s. Which is actually a nice thing to do before a challenge.

These images were captured and intended to be real challenge entries. Regardless of the reason, they are outtakes. They are quite different from examples from previous challenges, or tuturials on the challenge subject.

Let's say I have just completed some night photography for this challenge, but made some technical errors in the capture. I could post them in the forums to gauge potential voter reaction. What then if I reshoot the same scene correcting the error and submit to the challenge. Seems like rule #2 is there for a reason. I think it is a bad precedent to allow anyone to post their early outtakes and broadcast the characteristics of their eventual real challenge entry.

For outtakes, forum rule #2 begins at the time of challenge announcement and ends after the voting has been completed, imho.

Like I said in the original post, I already have an entry and it has nothing in common with these.

My intent was to show some examples and maybe even convince some people who wouldn't enter for lack of an idea to buy one of these and maybe get something they are happy with.

I didn't know about that rule, though - had I, this would have gone in a different section and been phrased differently.

These are spectacular shots, makes me wonder what the one you are entering is like.

Giving up on this challenge because of the outtakes. I don't have anything like this. Very discouraging policy change.
