Look but don't touch?

I've had 7 new votes and my score is still exactly the same.

Honestly I am suprised. I am sure as more people vote it will lower to where I thought it would be.

My entry is more of a protest on this challenge... not everyone in the world is celebrating 4th of July. I feel excluded from this challenge having almost no chance to enter a decent shot.
I was aiming for the brown ribbon but seems that still many people like it.

Everyone had the fourth of the July unless their calendar is broke. :)

But I feel the same way with "nude" or "photo an iceberg against the aurora borealis" challenges too.

celebrating, not "had"
as for the challenge types you listed, with your logic, if a split percentage of the members of the site lived in the artic and could do icebergs/aurora borealis, and a large chunk lived in the desert, but you still regularly had that challenge, the desert folk would get rowdy, and the artic people would wonder why, because obviously everybody can see water and make an ice cube.

Some of us celebrate every day we have, so there's that...

to which i say kudos for living a full and eventful life. but the challenge was to photograph the celebration of the american national holiday, which only 1 country in the world celebrates, and which many people on the site have no way of entering a valid image.

i'm not saying every challenge should be 100% equal opportunity to every member, but an attitude like "you had a 4th of july, unless your calendar is broken" in response to "i put something in that was a shoehorn because i live on the other side of the world" is not what was being called for after the already dubious forum reaction to this challenge in the first place

Most of this thread needs to be moved to the bitch and moan thread.

This challenge specifically includes beaches, cookouts and other activities that have absolutely nothing to do with a particular holiday or country per se, so it shouldn't really exclude anyone.

In my opinion, when I read the title of the challenge " 4th of July celebration" it means the American independence day celebration or not.
Why taking a picture of a beach is linked to this festivity????
When the challenge was announced I went out in the city (more than 6 million people living in my city) but couldn't find something that would even refer to it.
As Scalvert mentioned

Why name this challenge "4th of July celebration" then?

It's a Speed Challenge. It's extra. An extra challenge. Nothing was taken away from anyone.

The same reason Thinksgiving is often associated with turkey even though you could have turkey on Christmas, Easter or any other day of the year. Why include beaches and cookouts in the description if people ignore that to complain about a narrow, preconceived interpreation of the topic? With the possible exception of Antartica, there were ample opportunities to creatively shoot a strong photo for this challenge.

Fake it. Make a nice photo to make people think you're celebrating with them...

I don't do Canada Day, but I bet I could find a jar of maple syrup and have a go at it and thus honor my fine neighbors to the north with a tribute to their national pride.

Yeesh. Half the images in my portfolio were shoehorn entries into some challenge or other...
