I was tracking the score in the lunar eclipse challenge and my entry was at 5.875 with 72 votes an hour before the voting ended. After results are announced, its at 5.7917 points but with same 72 votes? What is going on here? When no new vote is cast, how did final score went down?

A number of reasons. Mainly it's the "scrubber" getting rid of incomplete votes (voting on less than 20% of the entries gets the votes scrubbed), and other anomalies. Someone on SC can explain it better.

It could also be a voter (or more than one) fine tuning their votes.

Yes, that totally makes sense.

REQUEST TO VOTERS FINE TUNING THEIR VOTES: Please only adjust your votes UPWARDS as otherwise it results in a not so pleasant surprise to the hopeful photographer...

Valid, but useless, request, I'm afraid... :)

There are many times where a photo looks great the first time around and when you look at it later, you wonder "what in the world was I thinking??? This is definitely NOT worth an 8!". Honest votes are better than unpleasant surprises, really, when you think about it.

That being said, I'll adjust scores up, but I usually never adjust them down. Simply because, I figure if it made that strong of a first impression, that's worth something as well. So I won't take away that first impression vote. However, if I've voted other photos the same score, and they've stayed the course and still impress me, then I might bump them up to distinguish between the two.

Yes -- I think that great photos should hold their greatness. But sometimes, just that strong, over the top first impression -- even if it doesn't last -- can say a lot for a photograph. It's just a different type of photo.

An hour before the voting ended you had 72 votes and a 5.875. That's 423 total points. After rollover, you had 72 x 5.7197 for 417 total points. Your number of votes stayed the same but you LOST 6 points.

Possible scenario: the vote scrubber knocked out a 10, but a new voter showed up in that hour giving you a 4: net loss, 6 points for the same number of votes.

When I was Voting on the last few times, I had noticed something and maybe someone of more experience can explain that as well and confirm...

When someone votes, they MUST vote at least 20% of the pictures in the challenge or they won't count... so if her score went down and someone did not vote their "20%" so does that mean the number sticks on how many voted but the vote number was erased and did not stick?

I would always vote on my favorites, but I would see that and it would say ... you have voted on blah blah blah pictures at 17% you need 20% to make your vote stick.. so I would just do a few voting on other pictures to make mine count, but I would give fair votes to the "extras"

I am not sure how that details or technology works after the voting ends on that. If someone could explain that it would be great.

Cherry picking causes distortions. Images are presented in a random order for voting. I think it's a flaw in the voting system to allow people to cherry pick from thumbnails. But I'm just tilting at windmills.

So the images that aren't your favorite don't deserve a vote?

It's kind of like people that comment but don't vote. I don't understand.

If I'm going to vote I usually vote on all...therefore everyone gets some of my love...because I consider myself to be a generous voter this is good for all in the challenge...those that are getting very low scores it should raise them...and those higher...it will confirm them.

I had also thought at one time that if someone when through and did a bunch or all 1's or 10's that those got scrubbed as well.

I do think pattern voting is scrubbed, but the exact details are a secret. I also thought the SC did an occasional friend/foe voting analysis. Maybe it's time to resurrect that effort.

Its not that the fact of not wanting to vote on the others,or that they are not worthy one way or another. I look at all the pics in full view. I am not sure on how to vote on those pictures that are just there, they just didn't catch me one way or another good or bad but just eh ok..to me to vote below a 5 is not fair either just because I didn't like something. I really want to fairly vote.. something that I think may be not high on my standard may be a 10 in someone else's eye. I need to learn this kind of eye... its not fair to vote unfairly.. I am not sure if people are voting below 5 just because they truly did not like that photograph or is it because that picture was just truly a "bad" picture? Most of the time these photographs meets a challenge. I don't like to judge that way I find it hard for me to judge and vote on pictures anyway because I have no clue to what to look for or even go with.. I do know if I like something a lot I will comment and vote high.
I will be willing to learn some guidance for those kind of pics that way I can vote on them all, ( I have had two challenges where I did vote for all) but I have found myself to go back to raise votes too... and I think a lot of it is because I am still "learning" the way around here still.

Also, I have made comments on pictures as well and not voted, but I was not allowed to vote on them because I am not a full fledged member, just registered.. if I could "vote" I sure would have.. I also consider myself a generous giver of love on my votes..
I feel that as a registered member, if we are not allowed to vote, we should not able to comment either.. not sure why it is set up like that..

Any comment is craved. Low votes not so much.

Your low votes are just as legitimate as your high votes. Perhaps it would help if you could think of the 4's and 5's that you dole out as 'tough love':

On Facebook if a friend posts a picture and you don't like it you can either lie and say 'great photo' or pretend you didn't see it say nothing and move on....it's the nice thing to do. But on DPC, if you say nothing it's not fair to the poor schmuck (probably me) who posted it and thinks they've created a great photo but doesn't know because you didn't tell them. Or, if you lie and give it an 8, same thing but the actual great photos that you also give an 8 are also losing out on learning how they've distinguished themselves.

What he says... Although the person who voted a 1 out of the blue on my entry, c'mon its not THAT bad! Can't fathom that.

could be any reason they just don't like it,its a DMC, or not technacly good or theve had a bad day at the office. I try to vote/comment on most challenges, the problem is that one doesn't get a lot of feedback on them

I think voting should be mandatory on all entries instead of just 20 percent. I think it is only fair that if you are going to solicit everyones opinion to judge a winner, then your opinion on all pictures should be required.

Of course, that is just my opinion.

But the whole point is to vote what YOU think the picture scores, in YOUR opinion. What someone else thinks is irrelevant. It is completely fair as long as you vote consistently. In fact, it is unfair to the images that you deem better and score higher when you fail to do the opposite on the ones that you think are worse. This has the effect of lessening the difference between them, thus negating the impact of your score on those 'better' pictures.

See that is what I am talking about LOLOL but I am ok with the suggestions of the "tough love- 4-5 thing" I appreciate that and that would be a fair call on that..

MEJazz Didn't mean to hijack the thread, but the reason that I noticed the votes even on my pictures change as well on my end voting I noticed as well hence me bringing up the 20% voting thing LOL

I think it was tanguera whom mentioned that as well... LOL

If everyone voted like you Jgirl57 then some people like me might never get a vote. If I don't get any votes then why participate in a challenge? If I'm not going to be in any challenges then why stay at DPC? If the bottom 80% leave DPC then who ever is left will chop another 80% off the remaining 20% and so on and so on.
Your voting pattern doesn't work. You can give me a 5 or a 4 even a 2 or a 1, I don't care just give me a vote.
