My wife has a business trip coming up to Geneva and Turin - so of course I have to go with her :)

We have 3 days at both places with a possibility of extending a weekend at one of the two spots - not decided yet. While she will be busy at work (I feel sorry for her), I have the freedom to wander around.

Looking at the map, I really want to drive from Geneva to Turin - it looks beautiful. Is it advisable to drive or should we stick with public transport?

Any suggestion on places within short driving distance of the two cities that I can explore during day time?
Any other tips?

It's an absolutely beautiful drive, yes.

I've lived in Geneva, and my gut reaction would be to take the extra 3 Geneva days and use them for a leisurely drive, then spend your extra 3 "Turin Days" exploring that area, which is a lot more interesting, IMO.

I drove a LOT around N. Italy for work and it was an "interesting" experience, since I don't speak Italian at all and the Italians speak at 300 kph. Driving outside the cities and in the villages is not bad at all, but driving in Torino itself was crazy. Personally, I'd take trains from Geneva to Torino, watch the Alps through the windows and rent a car for excursions into the countryside, which I highly recommend. I spent a lot of time in Rivarolo, which is just North of Torino and I found to be a lot more my speed than Torino itself. A nice day trip would be to drive SW of Turin up SP26 to eat lunch here in the Pian del Re. When I was there the road was closed there and you could only walk farther up...it was gorgeous.

Oh and make sure you tell your bank you're traveling, getting your card cancelled mid trip can be troublesome and merchants that accept Amex are few. I had some problems because our work travel cards were Amex. MC and Visa are fine.

Just realized I never shared the pictures here from the trip - I have been busy lately!
We had a wonderful time in Italy and miss the food, wine, and landscapes everytime we think about the place now!

Thanks everyone!

@Robert - I am glad you like that story - I realized I should have mentioned that Rajiv Gandhi was the prime minister of India (84 to 89)- (I won't be surprised if you knew that already), and Sonia Gandhi was practically running India until May 2014.
