Finished commenting.
There were some really good images. Some that I didn't like. But that's with every challenge.

Stats:
You have rated 80 of 85 images (94%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 85 images (99%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.2750.

Hopefully no one was offended by anything I said. Feel free to PM me if you'd like a further explanation of your comment/score.

Maybe that they don't share some particular artistic vision or appreciation or something - can't find the word I'm looking for but if someone says "I'm not fond of an HDR look" and that's exactly what you were going for on the image, you simply learn that the commenter prefers a more natural look.
Disclaimer: This is not a comment that I received - just an out-of-the-air example.

This should probably be left for after the voting period.

It's been done before, where people have messaged me about my comment, and voting was still in session.
It doesn't change my vote. Because once I leave a comment, my vote is finialized. I don't go back and change them.
I'm sure some people would, but the owner of a particular photo wont change my opinion.

But whatever's fine with me. Leave it till after if you wish.

You still haven't got to mine. :(

I'm looking forward to your comment

Just curious. Are you voting random (that is in the order in which they come up in your queue having started with the first one and now being halfway through?) Or are you picking the ones you think you like least or best or the ones for which you have a "ready" comment (no criticism meant there - it's just that sometimes I know immediately I could say something constructive and at other times I really can't think of much to say)?

Same here.

I voted each image the way it came randomly.
You have rated 85 of 85 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 85 images (99%) in this challenge.
The lowest score I gave was 4, the highest, 9.

I might not repeat this exercise soon. It takes way too much time but I believe that each one of us shall try it once even if getting occasionally an angry pm. (or a nice one for that matter). I urge the people who got angry this time to try to comment and mark every image in a challenge.
This is our photo show and we discuss among ourselves. Imagine exhibiting same work at large.
I also believe that writing the mark one gives, at least every so often, is important for both commenter or photographer. It seems odd that some people get less angry by an anonymous vote than by a specific person supporting his/her view.

As usual running late but prompted by the unusual number of comments on my image, ten in all and all negative (you bums) but well articulated and appreciated since it gives clear perspective on the voting. So thanks for the effort and I'll try to give it a try too. Frankly I used to do it compulsively but medication and age have diminished my energy and use of words so it takes a lot of effort and a dictionary now. So sign me up so I can stay informed if PMs are used.. Else I'll forget.

Smart aleck(s).

No problem with your answering, Robert, but my question was for Don.

Thanks. I noticed that your voting average at the halfway mark was nearly a point lower than usual; since the challenge images seem to me to represent a nice variety of styles, approaches, processing, subjects, etc., I was curious.

This is really useful and very helpful to see how the voters think. What is interesting is that most of the negative comments have related to the photos being DNMC and nothing negative said about the composition, lighting etc of the photos. So for myself this is a prod to ensure my photos match the challenge brief more closely and are not my usual shoe horns.

Thanks to all who have commented. Much appreciated!

Been away from dpc for so long, i decided to visit it today. I am voting on the the classic novels now and so far one comment for every vote. Hopefully i can go 100 percent on this.

nam,

this challenge is not unusual, scorewise. my scores given have been going down for a long time, since I changed my scoring criteria. I start at 3 instead of 5, because it's easier for me to add points for good qualities than subtract points for flaws. I don't see things in terms of flaws in a "perfect image" ... instead I see most images are boring and then I look for things that bring it up from boring.

I have done about 75% of them and my scores/comments really vary on my mood, time of day and what has been put into my body recently.

So there will surely great discrepancy .

yes, humans applying numbers to things is still a human process. revealing this truth about judgment is part of why I wanted to do this social experiment.

Interesting -- mine have been largely the opposite ... :-)

Mine comments seem to be about composition, lighting, or simple dislike; rather than DNMC

I have about 50/50 - and about the same mix of I like it/I don't like it. Personally, I appreciate all the comments and I see that everyone who is posting here does, too. But I can't help wondering how those whose entries are receiving a high ratio of "negative" scores and comments (and I'm sure there some in that boat) are feeling about now, even those who are aware of this "social experiment" (those who are not may be really taken aback). Hard to see how a very high ratio of "I really don't like this" for whatever reason accompanied by scores of 4 and below could be anything but demoralizing. But maybe I'm wrong.

Demoralizing? Perhaps.

But isn't that better than to remain unaware of the reasons you're getting those low votes all the time?

Or is it that we are able to more easily take the beating when we don't know the reasons why we are getting the beating? Is it just far easier to suppose that the voters are ignorant, and careless, than it is to admit that our work isn't having the impact we expected that it should?

no less than a score of sub-4 would be anyway. at least in this case it can be constructive/instructive.

provided the comments left are more substantial than "this sux0rs", anyway
