Working with my nephew to build a new computer. Mostly will be used for photo editing - I'm not a gamer. My nephew, however, IS a gamer and he may have selected some components that could be overkill for photo editing. Thoughts on this list:

Cpu: i7-3770k
Mobo: MSI MPOWER
RAM: Gskill Ripjaws 16G
GPU: EVGA GTX 600ti 3G RAM

I'm also going with one SSD and three spinning drives to be set up in RAID 5.

Looks like a solid rig. It is a bit too gaming centered though.

Graphics card is a gaming card. Photoshop does use some graphics processing for odd level zooms and other nifty features. But doesn't need that much power or video ram.

Gskill is great stuff.

I would look into getting a socket 2011 intel motherboard and chipset. And gskill quad channel ram.

Shouldn't cost much more and if you downgrade the graphics card a bit it shouldn't be any more.

But ivy bridge really makes no sense to me for a photoshop machine. The 2011 is their longer running chipset.

Yeah, I may do a little research tomorrow. Very much appreciate the advice - thanks!

yeah GPU is overkill if you dont want to play games, if I am looking at the right one on line it's $350. You could take some of that money and put it towards something else, or just save it

I am sure you could get away with an i5 3570 but the i7 is great.

I agree on the graphics card, it is overkill.

There's no such thing as overkill. Get some games, and/or try your hand at video editing for some fun. :-)

LOL at Slippy. Overkill on the graphics card - is this still true if I start to use my computer as a TV? I'd be watching online stuff, not getting a TV card.... But yeah, should I ever get into video editing, this would be nice to have, yes?

Go with the overkill on the graphics card. If he's any sort of gamer, at some stage he'll want a decent rig to play FarCry 3 on (which I'm tempted to buy a new PC, *just* to play it on)

He has his own computer he's built for gaming. :-) I suspect he's hoping I'll have one at least somewhat worthy for when he visits, though.

What is a CUDA core and why does one need them?

Because Guppy Cores just don't cut it? ;-)

CUDA cores are parallel processing GPU cores. Because they work in parallel, the more of them you have the better. You also need more RAM on the card to take advantage. If power consumption is a concern, you could go with a workstation card, but you won't save much if anything on the cost of the card.

Another strange question - are there any cool PC games with nifty graphics that are NOT first person shooters?

Maybe look into car racing or flight simulators? Those always seemed to me to have the most potential for actually helping develop some skills with real-world relevance.

TV tuning doesn't take much a basic graphics card is pretty damn good. It is the intense 3D rendering of games at high resolution that is the only thing that requires the higher end cards. This and RAM are the two places people toss money away on computers when they scrimp on the CPU. The CPU affects everthing you do on a computer

I would bet that the processors graphics would handle what the stated goal is of this system.
