Okay, so next semester I have access to 4 DSLR's that all do video, 2 GoPro's, some simple audio equipment and instruments, and a place to shoot (the church which is where the piano, drums, etc. are). Oh, the church has pretty a pretty good lighting set up for the stage.

I want to put together a music video with a few people who sing at the church. I haven't told anyone other than the head person that I am thinking about it but I am just trying to come up with some sort of an idea as to how I could go about doing something cool and exciting for them.

I have ZERO clue about a song that I would want them to sing so that I guess would be a good place to start.

After that though, I don't really know all that much about videography and would love some hints/tips/tricks to help me out while I practice up before I actually go about doing this.

Anyone know of any links or youtube videos that could help me learn some of these tricks?

Thanks! :)

I have put together 2 music videos and a commercial type video so if no one else chimes in I will when I have more time. I will say I hope you have a decent computer system and lots of patience :) Using multiple cameras should help, mine was all shot with one. You want lots of perspective and cuts. Check out a bunch of music videos and watch for the styling and editing. That will help you get an idea. I also suggest writing out all the shots you want to do and do a storyboard if possible. That will help you make sure you get all the footage you need. I really enjoy watching devin super tramps videos on youtube. He has done quite well for himself and he has done most of lindsey stirling's videos.

Both of those links take you to youtube videos. Good luck.

eta: My first video for comparison on someone who never shot video.

I didn't even think about doing anything out of the church when it came to video... I guess it would depend on the song if I could put together some sort of acting in there, huh?

Hmm... Thanks for the links! :)

P.s. - Keep the helpful tips coming! :D

Movement, video is all about tracking shots and keeping moving with through canera moves or through cutting to other cameras,
My mate does lots of music videos and I help him out and shoot with him, it's a slippy slope though you can spend many many hours working in final cut bad after effects

My mates company is Zerobelow on YouTube on my phone or I'd paste link

I think for the first one I will try to keep everything that I shoot inside the church. Similar to this video.. (Example Video)

I can maybe record the audio of another song one day and do a story based video one day.

P.s. - I will most likely use FinalCut Pro (which I'm not too good with just yet). So this might turn out pretty horrible. Lol.

Do you use a mac computer? If you do iMovie, while primitive, is simple to use and you won't spend hours looking at tutorials. That said final cut pro x is also very simple and you can always download a trial, I used that for my tattoo video.

I will be using the school's Mac computers. I thought about using iMovie... I thought Final Cut was better though.

I haven't really used much of either one, so I might be in a heap of trouble. Lol.

As a photojournalist(tv news) and video editor, I'd say keep it simple. First and foremost, get familiar with the gear. Focusing is challenging with DSLR's unless you have a special focusing rig. As you shoot, think about how you'll edit the video. Vary your focal lengths, so start with a wide shot, cut to a medium shot, and then into a close up and reverse and repeat the cycle. With that many cameras you should be able to set several static shots and maybe have your self or someone else be the cut to camera for close ups and moving shots, say of people playing instruments, singing etc. Feel free to use yet another camera to shoot cutaways i.e. scene shots, audience, close up of fingers on guitar etc. Make sure you have a way to sync up your video while editing. Like a clap board or a piece of poster paper that you can throw up in front of the camera so you know what take you're on. When it comes to editing, I'd say stick to cutting on beats, if it's a slow song you can use dissolves. Story boarding as mentioned before is a great idea. Sounds like it could be fun. If you have any questions, feel free to post more or PM me.

I'm starting this project this upcoming weekend, so hopefully I'll be able to work this out nicely.

I think my biggest issue will come with post processing. We'll see.

I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes. :)

Good luck, just make sure you get more footage then you think you will need, lots of angles and take your time syncing up the final project. I would also suggest getting artistic shots that are not of the singer(s) to use as cutaways.

Good call! I hadn't thought about this.
