As some of you know, I just returned from a 2 1/2 week photo trip to the Baltics. St Petersburg, Russia and Tallinn, Estonia were my real destinations. And I did a little sightseeing to and from. I have had a chance to edit the photos. For the record, I took about 6,000 photos during our trip. But won't subject you to them all ;)

I have picked 33 of my favorites and placed them in a slide show gallery here

And I have created the galleries below with a little bit deeper dive into my destinations:
. Amsterdam - 40 photos
. Copenhagen - 14 photos
. Rostock & Warnemunde - 14 photos
. Helsinki - 10 Photos
. St Petersburg - St. Isaac's Church - 12 photos
. St Petersburg - Winter Palace - 20 photos
. St Petersburg - Hermitage - 23 photos
. St Petersburg - Peterhof - 10 photos
. St Petersburg - Others I Liked - 31 photos
. Tallinn, Estonia - 41 photos
You can see them here.

This was fun. Hope you enjoy them.

You had a great trip. Too bad you didn't have time to go inside Peterhof - that's something else entirely.

Absolutely stunning. It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a set of photographs such as these. Thank you for sharing your trip.

WOW, Doc - Amazing and wondrous sets of images! I remember you telling me awhile back that you normally shoot 7 bracketed shots for each image to process using HDR - I was just thinking of how many shutter clicks you went through on your trip!

"Summer in Russia is like summer in Seattle." LOL - so true. :)

Add my thanks for posting these.

There's another thread about HDR and skies. You might find it interesting that essentially all these photos were the result of HDR processing, often with blended in parts.

General approach:
. 5 originals, 2/3 of an f/stop apart, mostly handheld in this case
. Merge to HDR in Photomatix (new version is great)
. Tone map (details enhancer or fusion)
. Open in Photoshop
. Blend in parts of an original to improve realism.
. Edit as necessary
. Crop
. Resize
. Save for web

I don't much care for HDR that looks over done, too grungy, too painterly, too halo-y, too ... and try for a more realistic look. Maybe these will offset the poor reputation of HDR.

I was on a camera-card-budget so these are only 5 originals per ... and about 6,000 originals in total. Nikon's image counter has only 4 digits and it flipped over to 0001 in the middle of the trip. Messed me up a bit until I figured out what had happened.

Sadly, with too little time to fully appreciate it. I need to go back!

With my Canon, if you look deep into the EXIF you'll see that the counter has more digits which just don't show in the normal display, but which provide each image with an individual "serial number" even though multiple files may have the same name.

In this example, the "107" shows that the image counter has been reset six times (I think it starts as "101"), so this was shutter-actuation 72,108 ...

Make - Canon
Model - Canon PowerShot S3 IS
Image Number - 1072108

I'll be back to look at your images — I had grandparents from Lithuania and/or Russia ...
