Just to get a better idea of where people are coming from. You and I compared our ratings and perspectives on a completed challenge a while back and it was interesting. I've also gotten a handful of very positive comments from you recently and t=it all combines to give me a good idea of what you are looking for. It's not the eye candy that usually wins.

Without context, it's still hard for people to understand. I've been trying to comment on all my 8's, 9's, and 10's, in most challenges, but I just bought two new computers, so time is somewhat limited.

Yeah, overdone eye candy typically doesn't do very well over here.

An overall score given doesn't tell all about being a lowballer. Like I said in another thread recently, I rarely give ones and I rarely give tens either... both are reserved for what I see as exceptional. I do use the whole rest of the scale and hence, don't have the highest average given. When I vote, I vote on every picture in the challenge. It's been a long time since I've had an avg score given for any individual challenge of less than 5.0.

As long as you gave me a good score on the Moon challenge, i'll forgive the lack of a comment ;P

How about commenting on the low scores, so people can learn and improve?

Would you be willing to show us how this plays out? How many 1s, 2s, 10, etc? You don't have to do them all.. just one challenge.

A lot of my low votes have nothing to do with the technicality of the photo. Sometimes it's as simple as simply being overdone, or unoriginal, or uninspiring. It could be technically flawless, I really don't care. In the expert challenges, I'm the lowest vote on all the digital art entries; I simply don't view them as photography and score them as such.

So commenting on the low scores would only serve to get people to either ignore me or to sway them to do photography which I enjoy, not what they enjoy. Submitting to a challenge you have to expect not everyone is going to jive with what you submit.

6 days and 9 hours left · you rated 1 of 79 entries (1%) · Finish voting dammit!

I am finding that one very difficult to vote on given the challenge topic & details.

I flipped through a dozen, then decided I didn't have a clue how a picture can both ask and answer a question and have the viewer guess the question and answer it.

It's possible because someone managed to do it on my entry. Hit the nail on the head.

that's why i only voted on less than half

Likewise: my image does exactly that, and the commenter got the question and the answer both right.

Define a 'low score'. : )

I love that answer. I agree 100% that folks need to shoot what they see or feel and also have little care for graphically altered captures. But I do try to keep in mind that those are there for the folks that excel in that arena and try to assess based of visual appeal of the picture.

Totally agree on this point, but...

Why do you vote in the Expert challenges at all then? It sounds like you've decided what you'll be giving these photographs before you've even seen them.

Because there are always entries which don't push these boundaries that I love. Knowing that mathematically if I vote on some of the entries, and because I'm skewed compared to the norm, I should vote on all entries for consistency across the challenge. In doing so, there's usually a handful which get killed.

You guys both asked and answered a question with your image?

Would you be willing to PM me the titles? I'm not voting anyway, and I'm really baffled.

Who decides what's uninspiring, unoriginal etc.?

The same old women are always inspiring and original while amazing (and clever) artworks are not.

I'm not necessarily talking of you, but I'll never understand while some stuff is considered original while other things are not.

PS. a list of clichés:

- The same little child with big blue eyes
- The same seascape with silky water in the foreground
- The same old women with deep wrinkles
- The same abstract and/or blurry shots taken with old film cameras
- The same glasses/macro/water shots
- The same butterflies shots
