I am getting more and more comfortable with LR but I suddenly realized on e weird thing.

I browsed the images in Fast Stone and they look brighter!!! On the same monitor. I shot raw + jpg. The files viewed were both raw.

Pls have a look and advise if there is any setting I am missing. I took as the start point in my processing the LR.

Capture of view in

FastStone

LR

Psst; both of your links go to the same image, the brighter one. I believe that the image ID ending in ...458 is the one you wanted for Lr.

The answer is that Lr is building the preview based on the RAW data. Fast Stone is looking only at the embedded JPEG. This embedded JPEG has the camera's processing settings applied, and so depending on the differences between this and the Lr default (which is *not* based on the camera settings) there may well be differences in saturation, brightness, color temperature, etc.

Thanks for pointing out the links. I fixed it.

Actually once I clck the image in LR before is finished loading I can see a brighter preview then it darkness once completely loaded. I do like the way the Jpg looks like so is there any way to apply the jpg settings and start processing from there? Or can I only pick the jpg in LR?

Thank you,

Tibi

1) I use LR and alway have a hard time with dimensions for dp? can you help me with this setting so I can maximize my photo quality for the challenges?
2) How do you change Raw to a jpeg for submission?
Thank you

Yes, the momentary brighter preview is Lr temporarily using the embedded JPEG while it builds its preview from the RAW.
The short answer to your question about applying the JPEG settings, is "not really" but that's not as negative as it sounds. There are profiles out there for some cameras that mimic the manufacturer's presets. Or, you can simply adjust the tone curve slightly for a single image to make it more like the out-of-camera JPEG and set this as the default for that camera.

Thank you for clarifications.

I am having second thoughts now to keep shooting RAW when I am really pleased with the outcome of the Oly JPG to include the nice dynamic range etc...

Would be great to have the JPG settings readable somehow.

Do reconsider going back to JPEG... by doing so you are throwing away all but 1.5% of your data. A 14-bit RAW file has 16,384 levels for each channel. An 8-bit JPEG has 256 levels for each channel, or 64 times less.

If users complained enough perhaps camera manufacturers would quit insisting on proprietary RAW formats. Then any RAW conversion engine could understand the intent of the in-camera settings, and there would be no need to constantly roll out updates to RAW processing engines for each new camera.
