Yet another "how much should I charge thread" (Sorry)

A friend of mine has messaged me on facebook saying that she wants a poster sized image of one of my photos and said that she is willing to pay me for it. But this girl and I are good friends. Enough so that I would almost be willing to just give her the file that I have of the image and let her do with it as she pleases with the price of the prints being her only charge. (I would get it printed from somewhere like Walgreens or something like this).

Any thoughts on what I should do? Should I give her the file for free? For 5 bucks? For 25 bucks?

I'm stumped.

I have a feeling if you give it to her for free, next time she'll expect the same.

Charge double what any place would do for a poster size, at least. Would she know the difference?

The original file would be useless to a lot of people who aren't so tech savvy. I would just charge for your costs and not more.

$25 or a really, really nice lunch.

that's $20 for the image, $5 for the print.

here's another way to look at it

do take some time to develop a pricing model that you can keep handy (or in your head). if you want to give good friends discounts, then tell them, "i normally charge $xx.xx for that, but i'll give you a discount because you're a good friend."

Do you normally sell prints? If no then personally for a good friend I would do it for free

If you normally sell prints then I would give a large discount

I have a friends and family rate that is marked up enough to cover myself for any returns or in foreseen expenses like reprints plus a small profit. This price is roughly half of what I would charge anyone else.

For small prints its about 1000% markup on the print costs. Larger prints and specially items is about 100%.

Are you single? Is she single? Is she pretty? Is there chance of a date....

If so give her a print......

Haha so ends my advice

IMO, giving it away is disrespectful, esp when she offered to pay. She may not be familiar with how to get it printed. What I have done in similar circumstances is ask her what she thinks is a fair price, & then agree to that.

This makes the most sense.

I guess me next question would be, being that I don't have a high tech printer... Who should I send it to to get it printed for her?

Sorry about the newbie question there but I don't ever print my images or sell my prints... This is all new to me.

Ask her if it's serious? You'd be amazed how many times I've asked that with the answer I wanted to hear.

I have had a number prints printed through MPIX that I love. I have also used Shutterfly and have never been disappointed. You can also set it up on Shutterfly where they will deliver to her home. I like Skip's idea of $25. It seems fair. Good luck to you.

The BEST way in the world to get yourself up the creek with out a paddle is to give away a photo!!!! OR even charge them just for the printing!! Take this from someone who did just that to my BFF's ... all of a sudden I have a ton of Bff's who want the same... NOW I charge EVERYONE (except my Mom,daughter, and brother) the same price... I get a LOT of sales from FB.. 16 x 20's are 41.00 11x 14 25.00 NO exceptions.. If they whine I explain to them the time involved in editing etc... I loved to get to tell the girl who does my hair, an old friend, who also charges me the same as her other customers, It's the same for me as you... Can you give me a free hair cut every time because we're best friends?? Sometimes with her I will barter out pix for hair.

Other wise my prices don't seem to deter sales... AND (another lesson learned) make sure you have the money or check BEFORE you print the pix... Still have 2 setting here from early spring that "They'll get by to pick up some day" Cash first print second!!!!

PS.. When they say they can get it at Walmart for whatever, I explain my lab and my putor are callibrated so what u see is what you get... Walmart's color will not be what you see... AND then if they say that dosen't matter much to them, explain that is your work, and you don't want sub-standard printed pictures out there of your hard worked photo!

If you're selling that many prints and have a smart phone, I think you can now get a gadget which will let you accept credit cards too. Also, if price is not deterring sales, it might be time to raise your prices -- I'm in the process of updating my 16x20 prints to the $60 range ...

I support the "one price with friend/relative/non-profit org. discount" (if appropriate) model -- be sure to write up your invoices that way.
