Left my computer on last night and woke up to a message on the screen.
Message says:
This Computer's local hostname "xxxxxx-iMac.local" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "xxxxxx-imac-2.local"
To change the local hostname, open System Preferences and click sharing, then click "Edit" and type the name in the Local Hostname field.
I have no idea what this means. I haven't change anything so don't know why I have the message.
Can someone enlighten me.
Thanks |

are you running WiFi through a router? Or through the internal WiFi? Or both? Did you upgrade to Mountain Lion?

I don't know, but I would:
- turn off computer.
- turn off and unplug modem AND router
- wait 2 minutes
- plug up modem and let it cycle up
- plug up router and let it do its thing
- boot computer
- hope it is fixed

My Mac is connected directly to the modem/router.
The computer and internet are working fine.
My concern is that something else may be happening - virus or something.
Could this be the case? |

Not a virus. Have had it happen a couple of times here. If you are using a router, once in a while the router gets confused and thinks you are a second computer with the same name. I set my router to issue static addresses, so I haven't seen this in a long time. But it isn't serious.

If it has internal WiFi, that may have come on somehow too. I connect through a WiFi router, but when I turn on the internal WiFi, it has to have a separate/different name.
Surely not a virus, as has been said. Get ClamXav off App Center and (schedule) run it weekly to check for viruses anyway. Better safe than...

its nothing you just cant have two host with the same name, most likeky your dhcp didnt refesh its table in the modem, unless you are on a shared network.
its not a problem unless you are runnign a complicated network but then you wouldnt be running dhcp for servers anyway so its not a problem |

Thanks everyone for your help.
I was concerned that it may be something bad happening but glad it's not.
Will get an antivirus on I think.
Once again THANK YOU |
