I would love those who gave me the low score to tell me why so I can improve my 'expert editing' next time. Otherwise how's a girl suppose to learn, I think I know who at least two people were who gave them to me.
To all those who appreciated the pic, thanks.

8.40 avg vote from the commenters showed me a few did like it, I commend you.

that's a fantastic histogram, i don't understand why you are unhappy

I donno, got a 10 from me :-) In an expert challenge, images like this will generate some low-ball votes because they AREN'T visibly "expert" in execution. I just live with it, myself. Lovely shot!

Artistic blur is just not appreciated by all. Many people don't like blur and will vote according to their likes and dislikes, not whether they think it is well done. A high 5 is doing well for a blur shot IMO.

I didn't vote, but would've given it an 8 for what its worth... This is DPC and this type of photography doesn't usually reach the mass appeal. Think of it as driving a Ferrari to a BMW car show... yeah, its a freakin Ferrari, but everyone there just wants to see a BMW...

Lastly, I think this image is stronger from a scoring standpoint...

Simply because the lines lead your eyes toward the subject and away from the center of the image... And the rain is more prominent... but hey, everyone's a critic...

Doesn't everyone know, blur rules, hehe. Just ask skewsme she will support me. Oh ok yes should be happy with the result, live and learn.

Why? I guess there are people who can't abide such blurriness or abstractness in photos, despite this one having a great atmosphere for the challenge. The Blue Monday would have done much better, in my opinion. I gave it 6, by the way.

I agree that blur is not always that popular and there is a certain amount of expectation when it comes to Expert Challengers but to cop so many 1’s and 2’s doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. It did impact well with those who understand and appreciate the artistic style of yours. I love it when my shots do that (not often enough though) and then for me the score becomes less relevant. It is a wonderful image Anita.

I'm one of the twos. Didn't like the image relative to most of the other entries.
I use my vote as a rank, lots on the bottom and few on the top. That way my top vote snatchers get a big benefit from my vote.

No, not in my opinion. 7 from me.

I didn't vote on this but could see how it is a love it or hate it type of thing. Everyone votes different, but I really disagree with the people that hand out ones so quickly. Don't let it get you down though, most people would refer to those people as "haters" lol

I think you deserved more 1s and 2s. My apologies for the 7.

Since I can't find out my average after voting is done on a particular challenge, I'm pretty sure this was my lowest average to date.
The low number of entries along with a fair number with excess PP meant I was fairly harsh.

With yours, I just didn't see a subject I wanted to care about. I know there's a person with an umbrella in the middle, but the heavy vignetting and blur detracted from them to the point where I was apathetic.

The D word, other than that I like you; although, an apathetic response represents more emotion than one may think.

I'm not a fan of the blur, and while I appreciated the image from a tonal/textural aspect, I couldn't really understand what was going on. I thought there were some stairs and possibly a person carrying something...I couldn't make it out (and admittedly, I like to).

Because this is my aesthetic and personal choice, I do reflect that in my vote. So, from a personal perspective, I didn't like the "blurriness or abstractness" of this particular image.

Interestingly enough, it did do something to make me look twice and process it longer than I did other images.

I can't see anything 1 worthy. I gave you 7. I think I like the blue one another point's worth.
05/25/2012 02:38:16 AM · #21
I didn't vote but if I had I wouldn't have voted high. It's a shot of a person with an umbrella, perhaps on a bridge, and it's blurry.

What was there to make the shot interesting? If the shot was in clear focus it would be a mildly interesting street shot, I would probably have scored it low. Is the blur supposed to make it score higher, if so why? What is the blur adding to the shot, what does it tell?

These are things I ask myself when I look at it, I can't answer them, so it remains, a blurry shot of a person with an umbrella.

Hope that helps.

Let me come forward as one of your "1" scores. I looked at it, and again, and did not get any association with "rain". I scored you DNMC. Looking at you entry again, reading the comments and seeing your alternative shot makes me realize the "1" was not justified. Sorry for that.

So I should have opened up a little more to your shot - lesson learnt for me. I'm new at dpc, and have a lot to learn. It still would not have made this one of my favorites for the same reasons that other respondents mention: composition too centralized, blur for no apparent reason, heavy vignetting and then unconvincing rain. And when offered your outtake alternative I would go for that in a heartbeat - clear subject, more appealing composition, clear blue Monday feeling.

oh, was that yours? i thought it was great.

Ok no problems, I was a Newbie once, and would of done the same as well, although maybe not a 1 but a 3 or 4. I even made such a comment to this photo which I gave a 4 to, on my very first challenge, but then I became converted, I saw the beauty of blur, anyway, maybe one day you'll be a convert as well :)

Thanks Cuttooth I knew there was a reason I liked you so much :)

Perhaps it is just me, but when one tallies the 9 and 10 scores and compares them to the totality of the 1 to 3 scores, is there really a lot to complain about.

It was, (in my opinion) a fairly well executed scores, but not necessarily worthy of either a 9 or a 10 score, at least not by my standards.

All of us have differing tastes, standards and voting patterns and these all come together when voting on images.

Just another person's view.
