Should I buy Norton or MacAffee, or do I use free stuff? My relatively new computer is unprotected now (trial ran out), and my old computer is quite infected (at least it acts like it is).

What do you recommend?

No for Norton/buying.

Download free version of AVG or Avast from download.com - they work just as well.

ETA: I have been using both combined on atleast 4 laptops for over 6 years now, without any issues.

Norton (unless it's this virus in my head that makes me keep saying that)

I'm not sure how you connect, but I get Norton free through Comcast. I also have Stopzilla (I bought it back when it was a 1 and done purchase) so I have that running as well. I also use on occasion Malware bytes (which is free). Between them I don't usually have any problems. I think certain ones are good for catching different things which is why I use more than one.

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE)

It's free and lightweight.

There's a new one called PANDA which works wonderfully, doesn't use up memory (important!) , and automatically updates and doesn't ever bother you. DON'T pay or use norton... Ever. It's a virus in itself.

ETA its also free

yep, and thinking like that is what let HIV spread so rampantly in the 80's and 90's

I've been an AVG Free person for years and have had no issues.

+1, but there's always a risk if you engage in high-risk behavior.

LOL! I downloaded a trojan in the form of a birthday card sent by a real friend on FB this morning. Stopzilla nailed it before it opened. I actually need to send her an email and let her know she's infected.

I have no friends that send me birthday cards so I'm safe it seems.

Avast (free version) for me (saved me a lot of trouble). I'm also using the mobile version.

No particular recommendation, but definitely use one of the free ones recommended by others, no need to pay for AV for personal use. The free versions are actually better in many ways. You get a virus scanner and that's it, none of the other firewall, spam protection etc. etc. rubbish that you don't actually need and slows your computer down.

Between Security Essentials and Windows Firewall, plus the hardware firewall on my router, I have had exactly zero malware or viruses get past everything. I have had a couple of notifications in the past 3 months of stuff that made it as far as the hard disk, but was immediately stomped flat by Security Essentials.

The sad thing about virus programs is that some are almost impossible to get rid of should you ever decide to go with another program.

Some of these cannot be disposed of unless you go to the Registry and delete them from there... a process I would not recommend unless you are truly adept.

AVG coupled with a Malware program will work wonders, but you have to keep up with the updates and ensure that you do not visit certain sites and make use of links that you are not familiar with.

The recommendations made relative to Microsoft Security Essentials are spot on and have worked for me for several years now.

ESET NOD32 antivirus works very well, takes few resources, quietly and quickly updates itself, isn't too expensive, and gets great comparative reviews and performs well in published tests. eset home page. I've been much happier with it than I was with the commercial competitors mentioned in earlier posts. Hope you find one that works well for you.

*sigh*

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

I downloaded MSE on the computer with problems. It found one trojan, but there was still a redirect virus that it didn't fix.

So I went to the other computer and downloaded AVG -- things went fine. Didn't find anything. It shouldn't have found anything.

Decided to try AVG on the other computer since it still had issues.

Didn't know that some virus softwares don't like each other.

Now have a much bigger problem on the computer. Won't start up -- black screen. I can hit f2 and get into setup, but can't go beyond that. :(

Since you both commented IRT Mac... I use Virus Barrier X6 for Mac. I pay a yearly fee like the major windows ones, but it's a full security suite and highly rated. If you have a mac, travel ever and have no security suite you are categorically incorrect. I check my logs regularly, and though I have never had a virus, or even a malicious code reported, people try to 'F' with my computer while traveling. The software ensures that they fail, and move on to the next one. I assume curious kids on the hotel network, etc... But Virus Barrier X6 catches the port scans, etc.. and lets me know where they are coming from. Without having this kind of software, even on a Mac... I assume I would be leaving myself wide open for those that believe "curiosity" is not a crime.

Same here - haven't had any problems (at least not to do with a virus) in many years...... touch wood.

Trust me Avast is the best free anti-virus out there, because it doesn't slow computer performance (unlike for ex. panda or bitdefender), and also doesn't show false positives (unlike for ex. AVG Free)

The free software out there is decent enough and I have used them in the past but was bitten once or twice with infections etc. Since then I have been using Kaspersky and it has been 100& effective. I have to wonder why 'we' spend vast amounts on our photographic equipment then load then onto a pc with a copy of a free anti-virus and expect everything to be ok. It seems to work for some people and they are happy to do that but for me It seems to be a very big risk.
