These are two images I obviously did not choose to submit, and were taken a while back, but I really like both of them. I was just curious of other people's thoughts on them? Artificial symmetry is one of my favorite things to create actually. :)

I like both the images kitkatklok posted, but they raise another question in my mind. I know Expert was necessary because of the duplication process itself, but does it mean we are able to do other things possible only in that rule set such as add a texture or replace a background or burn/dodge/clone an area out of the original image completely?

Yes.

Not that it matters, but in the birds one I just raised the levels until it was completely blown out, it was already super cloudy and basically looked like that. I don't think I cloned anything out, etc.

I have done that in images myself - it's very effective and I just love your result. However, I think removing all trace of a background that is there (even though blown) in the original is problematic in all but the Expert rule set.

I want the ONE image that's used in the image to still be recognizable in order to meet the challenge.

I think the abstract images are for another challenge topic.

And no... I didn't high five the photo... 'cause I'm right handed. :D

Not me, I only high-five left handed ;-)

so... rereading teh challenge rules, the image must be made by flipping copies of teh same image. can i create an image out of more than one image and then flip it?

i dont care about dnmc, i just dont want to be dq'd.

Yes. Follow Expert editing rules to avoid a DQ. Create your starting image. Then flip it.
02/19/2013 10:48:22 AM · #64
ok that's what i did. just making sure i can use more than one image initially.
02/19/2013 02:12:47 PM · #65
so it would be fine to take an image, cut it in half, then flip a copy of that? no dq?

There are no extra rules listed. So you could take a picture and enter it with minimal editing rule set and you won't be disqualified. Your score would suck, but no dq.

Well, but that's always true. I recommend that all those who hate Expert editing rules should make a point of doing that, as a protest.

Haha. Our very existence on this site is a protest. We won't go away!

Ummm... this is probably a dumb question... but what is flip and blend??? I had so much fun today shooting for a challenge again, but it seems like the challenge is kind of a "flip and blend" challenge, so I don't want to submit something that isn't what we're supposed to be submitting ????
02/19/2013 09:43:25 PM · #73
here's the original Flip&Blend thread -- should be instructions at the beginning.

You basically make a duplicate layer, flip it, then blend with the underlying layer using some blend mode other than "normal" (most commonly "Difference" mode). You then repeat, flipping the blended image in the other direction (vertical rather than horizontal), and again after rotating 90 degrees. There are many variations on the process depending on blend modes, color adjustments etc.

It's great fun for creating abstract patterns, but not really what's intended for this challenge, since the images are laid over each other and blended, rather than next to each other to create a "reflection" of the original image.

Here is the current Flip/Blend thread.

Ahhhh! Thanks, GeneralE! Whew! Glad we're not supposed to be doing THAT... that looks hard! With that then... I am very excited to have a challenge entry again. Expert Editing challenges very much intimidate me, tho, so my guess is... I'll be proudly in the barely middle of the pack, if that... but I'm proud to be playing again :)

no, it's easy, but very addictive. Be sure to experiement with blend modes and color adjustments. I've been messing around with some this week ... check out what I did with these otherwise blah photos (links in the info area) ... :-)
