This looks like soooo much fun. Wish it was on a different week - will not be able to hook up with everyone. Any DPCers who do make it, have fun!

Waddy, a shot of the burner firing from the inside of the balloons would definitely be a fabulous perspective. If you make it can you please share some of the photos here? Would love to see them. BTW, do they only do the Balloon Festival in May or do they do it on another month?

Sun Sentinel Story
Here is a local news article with more details about time and associated goings on there.
Hot Air Balloon dot com
This is where I found out about the event, and there is a listing of all balloon events nation wide.

OK, since there are people mentioning different times and days, it looks like we won't get everyone there at the same time. I'm only able to make it to one of the three sessions (due to the 2h drive each way), so can everyone weigh in on when they're gonna be there? I've updated the below list based on what everyone has said so far...

Attending:

Manic - Sat Morning or Sat Evening or Sun Morning (only one)
MelonMusketeer - Sat Evening or Sun Morning (pending)
JuliBoc - Sat Morning
FourPointX - Sat Morning/Evening (not sure which)
dbear - Sat Morning/Evening (not sure which)
Ja-9 - Sat Morning/Evening (maybe)(not sure which)
yakatme - Sun Morning (maybe)

Anyone else decided on when they'll be there yet?

9.5 hour drive from my house, too far for me plus I will be driving to CT during that time.

It's getting overloaded here. We have one coming back from the hospital today, gall bladder surgery, and another that will be back Firday PM or Sat AM from heart surgery.

I am expected to play drums for an outdoor jam session/ benefit event for one of my friends that has throat cancer Sat, from 11: till 1: .

I will be able to leave here around 1:30. It's about 90 minutes to Wellington if traffic is ok.
I hope to be at Wellington by 3: - 3:30 ish.
We need to swap cell numbers by PM so that we can coordinate as we go.
When I find out, in this thread, who else will be there when I arrive, I will send out PM's.

I just saw this - a bit late. Plus it's a little far for me, unless I were planning to stay overnight. Hope to see the next one - or one a bit further north.

There is a good chance that I can stay to be there Sunday AM as well.
Thanks Manic, for posting the updated list of times and people.
Here is another local newspaper article about the event.
Palm Beach Post article
I don't see anything about the fest continuing into Sunday, the 13th in either of the news articles.
The "Hot Air Ballooning" website lists the event as the 11, 12, and 13th.

Both websites you linked mention the balloon rises happening both Sat and Sun mornings. However, the polo matches will only be happening Sat afternoon/evening (and Friday too, but that's out for most people), and there's a long gap between the end of the Sat morning balloon rise at 9am and the reopening for the polo at 5pm.

The Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is just a short jog to the south of Wellington, and on the main road going south. It would make a good side run during the "down time" at the fest.
.gov site, Loxahatchee
It's about 10 miles south on 441.
I see that they are going to be up Sunday too, now that I re-read the articles. Sorry for any confusion caused.
It does depend totally on the weather though, about the balloons being inflated or flying. They can inflate in winds up to 10 mph, but not fly in wind over 8 mph. Check the weather report and radar if you are planning to be there.
Here is the local NOAA radar. The map is interactive, so you can zoom in by clicking on the area of interest.

I've decided that I'm going to at least make the Sat morning balloon rise session, so I've sent a PM to everyone who said they might be there on Sat with my contact details. Hope I get to meet up with at least some of you! :)

Well, as those of you on the PM list already know, this GTG was a damp squib. Not only was the weather uncooperative (high winds meant no balloon takeoffs and only a few inflations), but the only person who went was me! :( However, I did manage to get a handful of good shots of the balloons and of the polo match (which may appear in a FS sometime soon), so it wasn't a complete waste of time. You folks all missed out on the experience! ;)

I still think that the idea for this GTG was good though, and we should definitely try it again at some point... but lets pick something that's slightly less fickle when it comes to the weather, yes? :D

I agree, and we should probably have made a good "plan B" for foul weather.
It seems that the lesson would be that we do need to coordinate with the DPC'ers that are living closest to the GTG location ahead of time, and work out the "plan B".
They know the area and what would make interesting shooting.
Going in, this one looked like it would be a great opportunity to hang out with some DPC'ers, and to get some unusual and colorful photos.

A Meetup group that I belong to also planned a Saturday GTG for this event. I guess I was fortunate that I didn't feel well this weekend. I haven't seen any shots from the Meetup group yet, so I don't know what I missed. I'm looking forward to seeing your photos, Manic.
