Has anyone got an opinion regarding the difference between the Spyder 4 Express or Pro ? I have used the Spyder 2 express in the past but thought it was about time I updated.
Looking at the new versions of Spyder - there is about $ 60 difference. Considering these objects last about 5 years (my last one was about 4 or 5 years ago) I am wondering if the Pro model is of any benefit . Anyone have the latest Spyder - and what are your thoughts ?

I own a spider 4 elite, and to be honest, I haven't used its more advanced features. I have a laptop monitor and an old lcd that it connects to: in about 25 minutes i profiled both - and honestly did not need to make further adjustments. I did look at some pretty graphs it lays out to tell me how bad my monitors are =/ but all in all I don't believe I've truly explored any features that make it worthy of the "elite" designation.

I can run anyspecific test you want me to after work, so feel free.

I purchased a Spyder 4 a few months ago and am very happy with it. I went with the Pro model because it has the ambient light sensor that the Express model lacks which seemed a worthy feature to have. I'm pretty sure the Pro also has the ability to work with multiple displays and the Express only works with one- I think? The Pro is also the same hardware as the Elite, so if I feel like I can make use of the extra features the Elite offers I have the ability to pay for upgraded software.
I did note however that while the ambient light sensor has the ability to adjust the brightness of my external display based on the ambient light in the room, it can not do this with my MacBook Pro screen. So I am assuming any laptop screen can't really benefit much from the added ambient light feature of the Pro/Elite.

Interesting - what you say about the MacBook Pro - because that is mainly what I want it for . So - the ambient light feature didn't work - but was it ok otherwise for the laptop ?

Yep, it worked great with the MacBook display otherwise. I have a 15" in the latest version with the high resolution anti-glare option and the Spyder said it was showing 77% of the Adobe RGB color gamut. This is not bad for a laptop screen I am thinking.
One thing to keep in mind is that although the Spyder Pro won't adjust your laptop screen brightness according to ambient light, it will still measure the ambient light and tell you when it falls out of acceptable levels for proper editing. Of course you can probably look around and figure this out on your own too :)

my unit makes suggestions for appropriate working temperature based on an ambient reading, If that helps.
