It's still a rule, just as using all legal tools, but making something disappear in a photo and getting a DQ for it. Or having an original that is altered unknown to the person by the software that brings it into your computer from your camera. These are as we would say dumb mistakes that we learn from. Rules are rules and should be followed. It's not a witch hunt it's wanting consistency on rules enforcement. Something that is constantly brought up when an image is borderline on whether people think it should be DQed or not.

Umm.....I'm kinda thinking this is a pretty grey area on this one. I *know* if I submit a picture that the file size, the date, or the pixel with exceeds the limit that it'll get kicked back and I'll have to fix it.

So......how am I supposed to know that's changed now?

Or is it as simple as you are not supposed to rely on the stopgap measures of the site?

Stopgap measures don't over rule the Rule set. Just because there is a bug in the uploader, doesn't mean that the rule of 800px or 300KB doesn't exist or count. You still check the box that says I followed all the rules, including the file size.

Now that is large, and probably does prove that they are held at 800px during the challenge, because no way that wouldn't have been caught during voting. I'm glad to see that is the case and can be proven.

Hypothetical-
In the Tour De France- they continue to test urine samples past the date of when they were collected, since diagnostic tools are evolving. Athletes receive DQ's if it is found that they have received a performance enhancing drug, but not if they were taking a profuse amount of garlic, for instance. If the 800 pix was upheld during voting, he obviously received no performance enhancement.
A possible objection to this is that a photo uses illegal editing but still scores bad. This is not the same, as it never competed under "legal" constraints, whereas Allen's photo did. During competition, Allen's photo met legal criteria for the competition taking place. It was presumably edited legally and of appropriate size for voters to view.

A photo that is downloaded using say Nikon transfer or some other method that alters exif on ingestion but makes no other changes to the photo, and is edited within the rules and judged accordingly but after the fact an original can't be validated because during a different step in the process changed it is also due a DQ correct? I see this as an apples to apples comparison, so yes it's still a DQ. Just as the free study one that is 2400px or whatever. Both broke a simple rule, but were allowed by a bug in the system to be uploaded, but yet both still broke the rule and are subject to DQ. Of course this is all up to SC and Langdon and the opinion of the general public won't matter. However in the fairness to "rules are rules" there should really be no question as to whether they are allowed to stay or not.

Agreed. I guess the only thing I see as different is that we are going purely on speculation that a photo was taken within the challenge window, per your example, whereas we would (presumably) know whether these images were displayed at 800 or not in voting.
I do agree that the standards are openly stated, however, and should readily be adhered to. I guess I hesitate on this particular one because of the recent changes in the site and that the infractions ostensibly had no impact on placing.

Irregardless is a word, but it is a non-standard word that can be found in most modern dictionaries. I agree that regardless is a better choice, if you insist on being pedantic (or a smardaz)

However, %$#&! is not a word in any dictionary that I could find.

Just type any curse word into a comment on a news site and that's what will post. ;D

You have to excuse him, smardaz has a long history of rabid antiirregardlessness.

The city recently lowered the speed limit and moved two stop signs on the road down the street. Do you think the cop will let me off because they were recently changed? Or would I still be expected to follow the laws?

Let's say his radar gun showed you were doing the new limit (800px) even though you were actually doing the old limit (900px). He wouldn't even pull you over.

edited to clarify the analogy.

looks like we should DQ the two new recent red and yellow ribbon winners in the 50 ways challenge.

Why? I checked Tanguera's, it's 800 x 797...

R.

ETA: The "803x800" you might be seeing is the size after DPC adds the black border, which it does to all entries.

I was able to track down the problem after suddenly realizing that the watermark processor was the culprit.

I am now sure of the fact that the entries were displayed at 800x800 during voting and they were enlarged by the watermark processor after voting was over.

The witch hunt is over.

For now.
