Does Botany mean flowers? Or plant life? Just checking
11/27/2011 06:10:09 AM · #9
Botany, plant science(s), or plant biology is a branch of biology that involves the scientific study of plant life.

Therefore a flower is a plant, so it would be perfectly fine to post a flower or a leaf, or anything that grows from the ground, eg: fungi, weed etc.

Or anything that has to do with botany as a science too. I guess a picture of botanists at work, or of their tools, would fit, but perhaps not score, equally well.

By the way, for anybody living in London, this might be a good location :)

Speaking as a microbiologist ... Although it may be a widely held belief, fungi (including mushrooms, etc.) are NOT plants, and belong to an entirely different kingdom. I would call a photo of such DNMC in this challenge

Really? DNMC?? I beg to differ...

true algae ARE plants (but not cyanobacteria or "blue-green alge"... that is the realm of microbiolgy/bacteriology), so wiki got it partly correct.

not to belabor the issue, but note the PAST TENSE of the second sentence ("traditionally also included")... Wikipedia usually cannot be considered definitive. Look at what the Encyclopedia Britanicca states:

"botany, branch of biology that deals with the study of plants, including their structure, properties, and biochemical processes. Also included are plant classification and the study of plant diseases and of interactions with the environment. The principles and findings of botany have provided the base for such applied sciences as agriculture, horticulture, and forestry. //www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/75034/botany

i only bring up the point b/c fungi have been misidentified as "plants" (or as "not animals" as the Wiki text has it). but mycology is the study of fungi, and virology is the study of viruses. botany is the study of plants.

LOL - not to put too fine a point on it, sometimes close enough is close enough!

Well, that's my entry uploaded. Expecting to get absolutely hammered but you never know, there's always a small chance I'll be pleasantly surpr... meh, who am I kidding? Fingers crossed I don't get a 4! =)

The one thing I'm not so sure about is why we have a tree challenge at the same time as a botany challenge - can't they space out similar challenges just a little?

I had the idea to put a rose across a laying down girl's rear for this challenge, but I couldn't find a girl's rear, So then I was going to shave my own and pass it off as a girl's and name the shot "Butt-any" but decided against it. probably a good idea I passed...
