I am very discouraged voting and don't feel that my vote makes a difference. I recently got a camera but by looking at my voting record I don't think that I will submit my first photo anytime soon because I see the rest of the voters on the site don't agree with me. I have voted in four challenges and only given out 22 times because I am picky to some extent (depends on the day you catch me on). Only one of the 22 tens placed in the top three. Only five of the 22 made the top ten. Two of my favorite photos occupation's sherwin williams placed a terrible 32nd and motion's wooo hoo 41. I don't know if my taste is that bad or if people have a voting contract with other people but I am discouraged that my vote is soooooo off the mark. I will vote this week and see if my votes make a difference. I am just ranting.

If you look at most any picture here it will have at least one 10 and at least one 1 -- people are just different and the range of votes that each picture receives will show that. That is why all the votes are averaged together.

Don't get discouraged that your vote does not reflect the final placement, I am sure most people have similar experience.

That is just the way of the world.. differences of opinion...It is not something to be discouraged about. Only you, of course, can make up your mind. There are often photographs that I believe, imho, should have ranked higher, and visa versa, but that is not to say I expect everyone to agree with me.
What I do instead is this... I look at the stats on a photo at the end of the challenge, and much like tjuneau13 was saying, look to see where my score for that photo fit in the graph of all the scores given to that photo. Did my opinion fall in the median? Did I score it higher or lower than others? If so, why? Did the other comments agree to some extent with mine? Some of this information might even throw new light on my expectations of a photo.
Do I like Andy Warhol (poor Andy.. I have picked on him in a thread before as example.. sorry Andy)? I have to say I am not impressed with his work.. but he became famous! Does this discourage me from appreciating or learning to appreciate other artist's work? No one else has to agree with me..It is merely my subjective opinion.
I hope this helps in some way.

Sorry to say, but it does appear that your votes do not make a difference. I looked at your profile. You've made 95 comments, but no votes are showing, meaning that you vote on less than 20% of the submissions. When this happens, the systems removes your votes at the end of the challenge.

Having said that, I think it's great that you didn't "pick" the winners. Everyone has different views on what they like in a photograph.

Keep on voting, and remember to vote on at least 20% of the submissions.

DURING THE OCCUPATION CHALLENGE i VOTED FOR 145 OUT OF 145... IN MOTION I VOTED FOR 167 OUT OF 167 ON THE BLUE CHALLENGE I VOTED ON 100 OUT OF 243 AND ON THE TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE I VOTED FOR 86 OF 179. I BELIEVE THAT I VOTED ON ATLEAST 20% ON ALL FOUR CHALLENGES.

Austinscott, we have all been there. A lot of us end up realizing that this site is just one part of our photography and it's primary purpose is too help us learn about photography and have some fun at the same time. If I don't get any photos taken that meet the challenge or nobody seems to agree with me that's ok as long as I was out there taking photos and bringing home a lot of other images that I like. I hope you can keep your chin up and enjoy the rest of the things that this site has to offer and more importantly, enjoy your own photography.

i consistently give tens to entries that end up placing last.

You need to check with the head honchoes then, because your profile says you have not voted on any. It does take a vote on 20% of the submissions on a challenge before they even record your scores. For some reason your votes may not be registering. Your comments did register but your votes did not, for some reason. Check my profile and see how many time I voted, and I just submitted my first photo this challenge. But don't worry where they come in. A lot of my "favorites" came in very low but I still liked them and still chose them as my "FAVORITES" because they were and I didn't care what everyone else thought of them. To me the most important thing is the comments. I've received 92 votes and no comments. Now that is upsetting to me, as I comment on about 93% of those I vote on. I'm not even getting the other 7% to comment on mine. But that's the way it is. Hang in there and don't get discouraged. Find out why your scores are registering, before you drop out. It might just be something simple like clicking off your score too quickly. If you do that the score doesn't register. I wish you better in the future.

and according to the site gurus, your votes are dropped if the magic DPC algorithm detects "suspect" voting patterns

i'm just throwing that out because it's come up on other threads - not because i'm saying that's what i think happened to you

Boo Hoo. Shut Up. Who cares. Take a picture already, put it up! Who do you think you are? Do you think people on this site are out to get you? Again who are you? Most people (from my experience) on this site are trying to get better photos and it looks like it's working. And most of the critiques are useful. True there are some people who, with bad intent give a great photo a low score to help their own photo.

Case in point "It's a Frog Eat Frog World", who gave this a one? or a 7 for that matter?

But most don't. Everyone has thier own taste get use to it. You might be surprised of how supportive people on this site can be.

Lighten up.

Peace

you're right fibre optix!!! as for me...my current pix is doing not so okay! but i accept it, i always respect the voters decision. The first 20 voters, i got a 6.7 ave, and after 75 voters, 6.5 now after 163 voters my score is 6.1. well, that's ok, and just want to say thank for their comments, and yes it's very useful to me. (btw,as of now, i got 15 comments out of 163 voters)

enjoy the challenge!!!

I don't particularly care where I come in challenges or what vote I get, but what does wind me up is when I get comments that critisize with no constructive input. For instance, for my "Still/spinning" image I got a comment, and I quote: "TOO BUSY" unquote.

Why shout at me?

I don't mind constuctive criticism, but comments like that really piss me off, especially as the guy who made the comment had never even entered a single challenge!
I comment on pictures that impress me and others that attract my attention and a few more if I have time, but I would never, EVER, make a deconstuctive comment like the one above. Thanks for listening, guys.
