It's more what I'm offering.

If you need a ride let me know, I would be perfectly willing to pick you up in Ft.Lauderdale.

Ah... many thanks for the offer, but I'll be down there with my own car. I'll be dropping my wife & daughter off around 5-ish at FLL, and I won't be in a huge hurry to start heading north.

Since most of you guys seem to live further south, what would you think about something simple, like Applebees in Florida City (near where Routes 1 and 821 come together) at 7:00 (1/8/12)? That would probably be an easy place to get to, without parking hassles, etc. Would that be a convenient time/location?

Now you're talking about my neck of the woods! :D If you want something less generic than Applebees, there's a good Italian restaurant (Capri), a reasonable Mexican place (Casita Tejas), and a coupla BBQ places around the Homestead/Florida City area, and a number of reasonable places up around Kendall (which isn't quite so far south).

Sure... the Capri place sounds good... I see it's right near the Applebees (Route 997, which runs parallel to Route 1). The menu looks good too :)

OK then, very good - dinner @ Capri 7:00pm (1/8/12)?

I know Casita Tejas. A lot of people rave about it but I consider it 'fair'. I don't know Capri but it sounds good to me.

I think we'll etch that in pen now, yes :) I'll look forward to seeing you there!

I'm OK with either date, but will not be likely to dedicate the entire weekend to the cause. :)

I just realized that there is an event that I forgot to put on my calendar that I will be shooting all day on the 15th, so I can only make a GTG on the 14th. I'm okay with any location that the rest of the group settles on.

Sorry to keep bouncing this thread between the "actual" get together, and "my" get together :)

Just wanted to say that I'll be pretty much out of touch when we leave for the cruise next week... I just don't want any of you to think that because you haven't heard from me, that I'm cancelling or something.

Please count on me to be at the Capri Restaurant at 7:00 on 1/8/12. I'm looking forward to meeting any of you who are able to show up!

I'll be there Alan.

Having some car troubles... Transmission is shot so I need to get a new one and with no money I am not sure if I will make that one.

I am still going to the 14-15th GTG though. :)

Have a good cruise!! :D

O.K. I hope to be able to make one of the days and meet up with everyone:-) I'm interested in either the Everglades or the City area of Miami.

Question where in the Everglades - Shark Valley Tram Tours looks interesting

.
.
.
.

City of Miami - anyone up for stopping by Dropped Bowl with Scattered Slices and Peels ? Is it still there? It looks interesting but what else is around there?

I've never seen or even heard of that sculpture so I don't think that it is there anymore. There are a lot of other sculptures and works of art though.

As far as the Shark Valley Tram Tours go, well...it's alright. It's pretty much a straight shot 7 miles through the grasslands to an observation tower with great distant views and then a meandering trip of 8 miles back. The only good part is the observation tower with great views across The Everglades. That won't take much time and once you are done you are stuck on that side of The Everglades along The Tamiami Trail. There are some touristy airboat tours along The Tamiami Trail (Hwy 41 from Miami to Naples)

Much further west is Big Cypress National Preserve which is a cool area.....

....but, this is getting pretty far west.

I think that a better starting point for really experiencing The Everglades is to access it from the Southeast side from near Florida City. The drive from this entrance south to Flamingo at the end is a much better way to see The Everglades and the different ecosystems within. One of my favorites is the Dwarf Cypress Forest.

There are great places to view the wildlife such as the Anhingha Trail.

There is another good observation tower at Pahayokee that is as good as the one at Shark Valley. This photo was taken near this tower...

Flamingo provides the opportunity to see a rare sight: alligators and crocodiles coexisting.

There are numerous side roads, ponds, hiking trails, and water trails to explore along the main road from the South entrance to Flamingo. There are also several places to rent canoes to get further out into The Everglades or boats to rent at Flamingo to access Florida Bay.

This is an osprey nest at Flamingo - - - -

Anything new? Do we need to refresh the "who and when" list? It will likely be the 15th for me if I can be there. I'm still open to whatever plans are in the works for locations.
The 14th is still a possibility as well, since it looks like the crops here will probably get frozen tonight by this unusual cold front. That could put my work back to summertime standby levels.

I definitely can't make the 15th because of a paddleboard race that I now shoot for the Orange Bowl and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Miami every year. I hope it turns out that you can make it on the 14th, Waddy.

One week away....what's going to be the final plan?
01/07/2012 10:59:56 AM · #95
This is my last bump for this thread but I'll keep watching it. Hopefully there is still interest in finalizing the details for this GTG.

I wanna come. It will be so much warmer than our gtg. ;D

It's looking like if I go it will be the 14th. Is there any list yet about who is going to be there and what time and place to meet?
This S Florida gang is a pretty laid back bunch LOL.

I'm still thinking about the meetup tomorrow evening with Alan as well. It's about a 200 mile round trip from here, and by the time we get done eating and it will be pretty late to do anything else. I would like to meet Alan and other DPC'ers, however time, distance, and money may make it too much to try to do both GTG's.

I'm glad to hear that the 14th is now your choice, Waddy.

I'll also be at the dinner tomorrow evening. I hope that you can make it too.

Who else is "in" for tomorow evening? I may drive down if there is some interest in starting earlier, and finishing the day at the Capri. Maybe it's a good opportunity to do a location scouting/preview run for the 14th GTG if we start at, say, 1: or 2: ish PM? If 4 or more can commit to being there, I will do my best to make it down for the day tomorrow.

Hello Waddy and Robert

Cory had mentioned South Pointe Park which sounds good - Wynwood district would be interesting (is the Big Living Room still there?), Coral Gables, Fairchild, south beach....Sneetch Beach, west wind - where ARE we meeting?

I am looking to meet up with everyone on the 14th - hopefully it will be geared to city of Miami/South Beach.... Day only at the moment. I can't do the Keys:-(

So am I the only lady on the crew? Alicia keenon, Tammy Tammster when are you going to go?
