I waited til the iPhone 4 to get one, not because of doubts about the device, but because of AT&T's lack of 3G service locally. I'd go to the AT&T store and after they praised 3G and all the stuff it and the iPhone could do, I'd ask, "When is 3G coming here?" "Oh, it should be here in a few months at most." would be the reply... This went on for over a year.

Finally, Verizon got the iPhone and they already have 3G locally, so after all the hype settled down, I went and got one. AT&T was still promising 3G "soon".

Same here. The only reliable service around me is Verizon, so the iPhone wasn't an option until this year. Siri was the tipping point, and I'll get one when my current contract expires.

Gee, that sounds familiar. Yes, the same iPhone 3GS from 2009- without Siri- that continues to outsell the latest Android models and now threatens competing platforms as a free-with-contract option for budget shoppers. It amazes me that analysts and critics who failed to forecast Apple's quarterly earnings 35 times times in a row and declared the folly of the original iPod, iPhone and iPad have any credibility at all.

Good points, well made. However, I have some sympathy for those analysts and critics myself (I'm a 6 device Apple user, though always a late adopter) as some of Apple's success seems to fly in the face of reason, and I think that's because, unlike most other technology, a sizable number of Apple users have an irrational love for Apple products. Almost anything made by Apple would get snapped up by these people who are then rabid evangelists for the product. Some Apple products, I believe, would have failed if made by another manufacturer.

For me, the genius of Steve Jobs is like the genius of Kaiser Soze - he has managed to convince the world that he and his company are not suits, are not 'big corporation', are somehow 'quirky' and that the person who buys the 100 millionth ipod is somehow making a slightly off-the-wall lifestyle choice; while in fact they are buying another piece of Chinese-made plastic stuff.

That sort of thinking is why competitors have been unable to replicate the success of the iPod, iPhone and iPad, and some of it is visible in this thread. Apple's success comes not from the hardware, but from the way the product works, the attention to detail and the manufacturing quality: the overall customer experience. Customers will not flock to any product made by Apple (witness the Apple TV), but they do appreciate a well made product that works well. If you look at a product from the standpoint of specs, Apple isn't always the top hardware, but there's no contest for ease of use and productivity. The myth of premium pricing is becoming a relic of the past (PC manufacturers are struggling to match the MacBook Air), and specs alone don't tell the whole story. The 3G iPhone 4s features the exact same upload and download speed as non-LTE 4G (with better battery life), and the new 8MP camera blows away any other cell phone camera available. Six months from now, when an iPhone user merely tells his phone to move the meeting with Bill to Wednesday at 2pm and send a text message to his wife saying he'll be home in an hour, the Blackberry user next to him will feel embarrassed to type on a keyboard.

lols, then full circle when it gets a little red light ... and the person next to you says '... open the iPod bay doors ...'

I forgot that Scalvert does not allow anyone to downgrade Apple in his presence, I think he either owns stock or gets some money for every positive post he makes on the web.

Seriously though, I agree with Ray, I have nothing against Apple, but the Apple faithful just crack me up. It seems unfathomable to them that some of us not only are not interested in owning an anpple but (shock and horror) actually LIKE Windows. Apple makes a fine product, of this I am sure. However, so does Dell, LG and many other manufacturers. Windows is deeply rooted in the corporate environment and I do not see that changing. I like the fact that should I have a problem or want to upgrade some hardware on my pc I can simply open it up an do it. I love my Droid Incredible 2 and it's 8mp camera, which, by the way I voiced this post on...no typing, but I could care less if some blackberry owner next to me is embarrassed by it.

I use a Mac for work and have a Dell laptop. I constantly have to use my personal laptop to get things done because my Mac crashes all the time!

That said I love my iPhone 4 a little bit too much...

Must be something wrong with it, the OS is usually very stable. Saying that, I had been thinking my iMac was close to death for years, it was crashing with video corruption. Re-imaged it, it's been great, it just got itself assigned my music server.

Actually if I'm completely honest it's Microsoft Office software and Adobe Acrobat I have most trouble with... :)

Still, I never have any problems with my Dell!

I can do the same on my Mac.

What I don't like about PC's and a big reason why I switched is that with the PC, I was forced to open up my pc to work on it because something went wrong. I've had my MacBook for nearly 3 years with and that's never happened once. My brand new work PC, a top of the line Dell workstation is already on its 3rd video card. I have upgraded the RAM and replaced the HD on my Macbook. Replacing the HD was made easier than any HD replacement I've done on a PC by using Time Machine.

I want to work with my computer, not work on my computer. That's Mac.

I just got my first smart phone. A Samsung Galaxy S2.

So far I like it. Deal was better for it than an iPhone as I don't use a phone enough to pay the high monthly price of an iphone4 deal.

So far I'm happy with it. Time will tell.

Not that I looked over the whole list, but what I did view shows more of a failing of the patent system than anything else. I am not surprised, mind you, since the ludicrousness of what can be patented is well known.

As someone in the technology field, software patents are a known thorn in the side of much innovation. But that is a different topic for another day.

Don't mistake my comments for bashing Jobs, I think he certainly had his contributions, but most of them were in business and marketing. One could arguably call him a visionary as well for giving users the best "user experience" available when it came to using portable devices. That still holds true today when it comes to the homogeneous environment that is supported by Apple products.

On a lighter note, you may enjoy iPocalypse Now.

That is a kick ass phone you have there. The screen is the best. I have the original Droid. My time is up and I decided to go with the iPhone 4S this time around. It will arrive Friday. My decision was based on being able to use the phone's iCloud feature with all my other Apple hardware. I'm hoping the Siri Voice feature will live up to what they say.

On another note: If you haven't already...you should start using the Google Voice search app that comes with the phone. It works really well for setting alarms and calendar events, and dialing contacts on the phone. It is VERY GOOD at text messaging....

....hit the mic button and say: Text to Paul (or anyone in your contacts) and then simply state your message. After a few seconds, the message box pops up for you to approve and then send. It works so well that I actually had to increase my message limit from 250/month to unlimited ! No more typing short coded messages....I can actually speak a whole paragraph and 99% of the time, it gets every word right. (proper nouns and such are a little harder)

Here's some instructions on the App.

Let me know how you like it.

Those two things have been solved. There's now an option to take a shit shot with the volume button, so that skewed hand position is better, and it has MUCH better auto focus and stabilization. I think your pet peeved have been fixed! This, for me, is one of the main reasons I'm upgrading. If you've seen some of the photos taken with the camera, maybe you'll change you attitude.

Too bad not much else changed aside from this and Siri.

I'll be taking some pics with my Droid this week. I'll try to make them really good. I want to compare with my I4S when it arrives.

I ordered my first iPhone at 3am Friday morning. Confirm email said it would be at my door on 10/14. I went to check order status today and it said "due to ship on 10/24". Come on Steve....help a brother out!

On Friday, my order status showed "shipping" on October 14. Today it shows "delivers 24 Oct to 31 Oct". I believe the dates are all still the same, and that it will ship on the 14th.
