Steve Jobs died today at 56. Battled pancreatic cancer for 8 years. Bummer! One of the greatest innovators of this century.
Over 200 patents. Inventor of the GUI (graphical user interface), that uses icons and windows to use a computer. Co-founder of Pixar.
Radically changed the way people use music, media, technology, computers, and communications.

I've been a Windows dude for nearly 30 years. About two years ago I switched. My household has 3 MacBooks, 1 iMac, 3 iPhones, 1 iPad, 2 Apple TV boxes, and too many iPods to count. I just wish the iPhone had a bigger screen for my old eyes !!!!

It cracks me up that the tech media is disappointed in the iPhone 4S because it didn't live up to the hype that they, themselves, created around it.

So true. They should have called it the iPhone 45 and said it is years ahead of itself.

Maybe so but they did make an announcement of a new "cutting edge" phone that is anything but cutting edge. The iPhone has fallen behind in the phone race and this new offering does little to slow the competition.

Siri is the bridge computer from Star Trek turned into reality. The original iPhone revolutionized cell phones with now-ubiquitous touchscreen interfaces, real web browsers and email, videoconferencing, an app industry, and vastly simplified interfaces. The new, context-aware assistant function could potentially top all of those. Within a few years, typing on a phone will be as archaic as the rotary dial.

Bet if they went with the "iPhone 5" name and put the guts in a nicely tapered case, the global devastation plaguing the technorazzi would be toned down a notch or two. ;)

Looking forward to using it, but I wish someone could come up with a realistic-sounding artificial voice already. :-( Why is it such a problem, I wonder? I hate artificial speech. You can tell right away how fake and dissociated it is. If it's an option, I'll probably turn off the voice on my iPhone 4s.

I have to say that my household has 3 Iphones. Two 4's and one 3G. I have the original Droid. I have access to many of the new Android software devices at work. They are very good. The Super Amoled Screen is unbeatable. The next batch coming in the next 90 days will have Super Amoled HD. These will be unreal.

However, as far as the software goes...I'd say all is equal. The only thing that has me even thinking about buying the new Iphone at 2am is the Siri voice control. I haven't typed out a text message on my Android in over 60 days because of a FREE voice app. It works really well and you can pretty much speak at a regular pace and it lays it down perfectly. However, using the voice commands to set alarms and pull files is "not too good". If Siri can do what they say it can do, then the race is over. People will flock to the new Iphone once the users start giving the thumbs up. However, if Siri is a flop, then many will wait for the Iphone 5.

My biggest minus for the new Iphone is the same size/type screen. My contract is up and I can get a new phone. I'll decide tonight if I want the Iphone.

Reason to get the new Iphone:
Processor
Siri
Cam/Video
Itunes
Fully functional with my car deck
Icloud - to share with my other 5 Apple devices in my home.
Remote control for my Apple TV box (Instead of the simple remote that ships with ATV)

Reason against:

Small screen as compared to newer phones on the market.
Perhaps a full blown new Iphone coming out in the next 12+ months with 4G access and larger screen.

I'll post at 2am central time if I pull the trigger.

I don't do much typing on my droid phone now. I use voice for searches and for most text entry. But I do recognize that if Apple pulls off a smooth interface and experience and expands voice as a two way communicator, their strong suit, they will quickly pass the current voice implementations and the others will be playing catchup again. I was reacting to the fact that the new droid phones are pretty powerful and have all of what the 'new' iPhone is just catching up with. In terms of camera and processor speed that is. They are ahead when it comes to screens and aesthetics like slimness, IMO of course.

Btw - as I type this on my iPad I'm hoping you are right and it migrates here!

He did NOT invent the GUI. My former company Xerox did. Research the Xerox Alto computer. The project was led by Douglas Engelbart who incidentally was also the inventor of the computer mouse...again...not Steve Jobs as many have written or said in the news the last 24 hours. BTW...Xerox also invented the Ethernet card among many other computer related technologies.

How about the mp3 player. Did Steve Jobs invent that as many today are giving him credit for? No he didn't. In fact I owned a Diamond Rio PMP300 three years before the first iPod ever hit the market. It had great sound, and nice build quality, but I took it back and got my money refunded because every time I clipped it on my belt the batteries would fall out if I turned a certain way. I loved it, and was torn on whether to return it, but didn't want to deal with the battery situation. I could only hold about one album worth of songs on it, but it was a great option to carry some of my favorite songs and rotate them out once in awhile. That was the first real mp3 player to be marketed in the United States, but the first one invented was the MPMan made in Asia. I believe that was earlier in the same year, but I could be wrong. Perhaps it was out even before that.

Anyway, Steve Jobs was a master business man and was an innovator of products that took existing technology and refined it into something many wanted. I give him all the credit in the world for his marketing skills and ability to sell a product. He could sell snow to an Eskimo. However he was not an engineer, nor was he a programmer. He was not an inventor, and to compare him to the likes of Edison, Bell, Galileo etc (again as many have today)....men who created something out of nothing is stretching reality.

As for the smartphone comment. Well, Apple was about 15 years late on that one as well. Long before the iPhone we had Palm, Blackberrys, Windows phone, and some even before that.

If you really want to get technical Steve Jobs and Apple gave us the iEverything...but without Bill Gates and Microsoft pumping millions of dollars into the company to save it from extinction none of it would have happened as we know it.

Dave is a very smart man. I golfed in a couple of tournaments As a guest for a few years with a bunch of old Zerox people and this was always discussed. Jobs was a brilliant marketer and CEO and demanded perfection to his standards
but he invented little. Still, without his push things would not have happened as fast.

Most of the time the robotic sounding voice is completely deliberate. Studies show that most people do not want a machine to sound fully human and prefer a synthesized version. Though I'm with you. I'd prefer a fully human sounding voice.

I spent an hour looking for a synthesised Morgan Freeman voice a long time ago. It might be worth trying again.

i agree with everything you said, and i am not an apple fanboy, i own zero apple products, and i never intend to, but Jobs changed the world. without apple, smartphones wouldn't be where they are today, notebooks wouldn't be where they are, computer animation replacing hand drawn, the model of the music industry wouldn't be the same and we probably wouldn't have such an advance in streaming video either. the truth is Jobs showed everyone how to do it, how we wanted it, and really what we wanted. he may not have invented the world but he sure as hell led it in a new direction and to compare to to the greatest minds is just.

Then people are even more stupid than I'd previously thought. :/

I think the realistic voice thing is very similar to this: //www.china.org.cn/arts/2011-04/11/content_22334006.htm

There are people who freak out when a robot looks too human, so I guess it's along the same lines as having a less-than-human voice for this phone.

Here is a list of 317 things he IS listed as inventor or co-inventor of. So I guess he DID invent something.

so he "invented" different shapes of towers, laptop cases and mice?

I don't know who was responsible for the Imac but...

....after taking down my PC to put up the Imac, the very next thing I did was throw my PC speakers with all those freaking wires in a box. I took the box to work and gave the speakers and wires away.

The bluetooth keyboard with mouse along with built in wifi and the built in (very nice sounding) speakers are great features. For the first time in my computing life, I have a powerful computer with a BIG flat monitor on my desk with ONE count 'em....ONE wire sticking out the back.

Exactly. That's not inventing. It's design and innovation, and there is a HUGE difference. Edison didn't take a light bulb and make it better. He invented it.

Sure, put the iPhone in airplane mode (no cell service) and connect over WiFi using Skype.

That would be worth it. I'm Surprised at Shannon's shadiness, though. :-P

Search Google for "iPhone 3GS disappointing" and you'll get over a million hits bemoaning the mere hardware bump, the lack of anything really new, that it's not an "iPhone 4," and how Android will take advantage of Apple's failure to innovate. Gee, that sounds familiar. Yes, the same iPhone 3GS from 2009- without Siri- that continues to outsell the latest Android models and now threatens competing platforms as a free-with-contract option for budget shoppers. It amazes me that analysts and critics who failed to forecast Apple's quarterly earnings 35 times times in a row and declared the folly of the original iPod, iPhone and iPad have any credibility at all.
